Rabbit decoys?

I've decided to get somewhat serious about coyote hunting, and I have toyed with the idea of some kind of rabbit decoy.

Just wondering what you'd suggest I use, and what you've had success with.

And price range...

We're going to Calgary tomorrow, so a trip to Bass Pro Sports is definitely in order. :)

Oh! And I am also considering purchasing a hide. Which would be a better purchase, the hide, or a decoy?

The quiver critter works pretty good. I called in a coyote yesterday and when he broke the treeline he stopped and instantly zeroed in on the decoy, it convinced him to keep coming. Works great

They work well.
Cabellas had em on sale a while back.

Buddy of mine lost the cloth rabbit off of his and "borrowed" one of his kids stuffys....a dirty pink and white bunny... with a bow.
He put that on it and it still works.... lol

I used to use a rabbit fur, with feathers glued on it, taped to an old whip antenna

I guess it's just a matter of getting some movement out their to catch their eye.

Yeah in addition to domestic pets, destroying livestock and being a general nuisance. Hell, coyotes killed a young woman in NS a couple of years ago. If these are'nt reason enough to shoot them on sight I don't know what is.

More important than a decoy is a good handcall and some knowledge of how to use it. Stand choice is also more important. Wind, sun, terrain.

Yes, coyotes eat mice.

But, they're not eating the ones close to my house, are they? And if they were, that means I have coyotes in my yard, on my deck and playing with my dog, horse, and sons. ;-)

Actually, I really like predators, a lot. So much that I am not sure that I could personally kill wolves or grizzlies.

However, that doesn't mean that I don't recognize that managing populations is necessary. And there do seem to be a tremendous number of coyotes in this area specifically. I certainly don't think I would ever be shortsighted enough to have a "kill 'em all" attitude, and if I ever display that kind of disregard for the complexity of biology, conservation and ecosystems, then I am more than certain responsible people on this forum will call me on it.


As far as calling, we have certainly been practicing. And my "we" I refer mostly to my very enthusiastic nine-year-old whom I have to pry out of his camouflage at bedtime. If he could, he would sleep in it, with all his calls lined up on his nightstand table.

Although, I did see one the other day just on the side of my driveway, and I was able to grab the call and maintain his interest long enough to have taken a clean shot within range (had I had a rifle).

And two days ago, my son went for a walk in the coulee next to the house and about two minutes after he went down into it, out came a coyote running in the other direction. And the other day, I saw another one cutting through our field. There really do seem to be plenty. And I really want to learn how to skin them, and preserve the hide.

I always wanted to take the wife's pet rabbit out coyote hunting with me but the wife didn't think it was such a good idea.
