I just bought a new Grohmann DH Russell belt knife (Survival # 4), mostly because I've always wanted one of these Canadian classics. I just wondered if anyone has any hunting or other outdoors experience with one of these knives. All information welcome.

Used them for most of my life, I have an original 1958 maodel and an original 1962 model that ride in my pack , ready to go to work.
These are original Russels before the buy out.
I used them proffesionally for years, and my younger brother still does.
They are now made by Grohmann, who worked for Russel .
I visited the factory a few years back in Pictou N.S. and saw Grohmann's knife he made for his journeymen ticket in Finland( I think he trained there)
It takes about 20 minutes to open every blade on it!!
The factory is very cool.

I've had a few. Used them for 30 years in the air force....they were issue knives. Still carry one today in my backpack. Many deer and moose have seen this blade. You never want me to sharpen your knife for you lol. Why I can't get the hang of it I don't know. I've got a lansky, diamond steel, and other gimmick sharpeners. The only way I can get a knife half decent sharp is through perseverence and a lot of filings on the floor lol.

Hey Cowboy, great pick. I grew up in the next town over from their factory and have toured it twice now. My wife bought me a Grohmann #1 in 1999 for Christmas without knowing the connection. It is my primary knife now with much blood on its blade, and even more memories. You will NOT find a better knife IMHO! Enjoy.

PS And YES, their factory is very cool.

I picked up a small Grohmann skinning knife when my wife and I visited Pictou a few years back. It's a beautiful little blade, probably the best looking knife I own, but I have a heck of a time trying to keep a good sharp edge on it.
