Anyone here hunt with their 1894? 44rem mag? What do you hunt? Home brew or factory ammo? Sights? Scope?

Maybe this should be in guns...whatever...:)

i dont personally hunt with one but you could only really use it for deer at the most if you use handloads

Are you serious????? I used to launch a 240 grain bullet just shy of 2000 fps out of my Browning B92 levergun in .44 mag. Unless you have owned, reloaded for and chronied .44 mag loads out of a 20" barrel you are talking out of your hat.

1900fps with a 240 grain bullet is nothing to sneeze at. Deer at the most??? WOW!!:snapoutofit:

For what its worth i was loading H110 2 grains over max using a 240 grain bullet and it poleaxed a couple deer at just over 120 yards one year. I wouldn't hesitate to use this on elk, moose or bear out to 100 yards. I miss the .44 mag and have been toying with buying another someday.

Lots of folks consider it ideal for black bear, esp over bait. I carried mine during the new South Country cougar season last year. Didn't fill my tag but I was quite comfortable that my Marlin 1894 44 RM would be effective had the opportunity arisen. Currently I shoot factory Winchester White box 240gr loads.

I use a 1895c in 357 mag as my secondary gun(bow first) when baiting bears. It does a great job both if the bear decides to climb my tree or after it is time to go and find him as it holds 10 rounds and is easy to get on target in the thick bush. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on deer out to 100 yards. I use factory ammo right now. with a 1.5-4 scope.:)

If you are handloading for one of these, they are very sensitive in the type/ogive of the bullets they need.Gold Dots shoot great, don't cycle reliably.Likes conventional H.P'.s In the cartridge O.A.L. department, a LITTLE on the long side can cause mine to jam up like crazy. And the screws shoot loose.Other than that, great.I have the 1894 FG (.41 Rem. Mag)210 gr. bullet..I hunt with it, I just want to keep the range down to 100 m or so for deer size game.

I loved mine and miss it. I think it can handle all N.A. big games within 150 meters. I used 240 gr. Winchester white box ammo from Walmart.
First I mounted a scope on it, but removed it shortly, it shoots pretty good with open sight, no problem to hit beer cans at 100 meters.
I believe it's a good secondary gun for bow hunting, hiking or a general "bush gun" due to its size and performance.
Two of mine friends bought one after they tried mine :)

I sold my 1894 44 cowboy limited to my son and replaced it with a IMI timber wolf in 44.I shoot 265gr ranch dogs and would go after anything in NA with it,100 yards or less for big stuff or griz. Deer or black bear 200 yards. At 12 feet I got 4 feet of penetration on a black bear!

Sounds like that is about what an inline muzzy can do... and I'd hunt anything in North America with mine.
