Any flats fishermen out there?

My good fishing buddy, and fellow forum member Moose Guy, caught and released this monster Permit on his fly gear just a few days ago. He is travelling back to Canada, so I posted it for him.

It's his largest to date, and a complete hog of a flats fish.

That is huge, when we were in Cuba a guy caught one about 8 lbs, but that looks much bigger than that.

That's a beauty.

What do you use for those?

Crab imitation patterns?

I'm thinking more like siamese cat. jeebus that would be fun on a flyrod.

that permit is unreal, did they get a weight on it? What tip-it strength was he using?

Moose ties his own crab and shrimp imitations during the cold winter months.

I am not exactly sure of his setup, I'll ask him when he gets back to town. Its a bite and shock tippet coming off a Spey rod.

He didn't mention length, but he said the weight estimate was north of 30lbs!

I have a mutual friend to the angler in the pic; they said the weight was around 35lbs. Truly a catch of a lifetime. Congrats

Great catch. By all accounts, they are the hardest fish in the world to catch on a fly.

Awesome fish for sure, especially on a fly rod !!!

........but they do get bigger !!!!!

World All Tackle Record is 60lbs from Brazil

Del Brown holds the Fly Rod record of 41lbs 8oz on 8lb tippet....

Truly was a fish of a lifetime or 2. Was using a custom sage 10wt xi2 ( not a Spey ) with a Tibor riptide reel. 8 ft 16lb leader with 1.5 ft of 15 lb pline flouro ( not a shock bite tippet ) This fish is by far the highlight of my angling career. I feel very fortunate to have caught this beast. No idea how long the fight was as time was irrelevant. Almost spooled me and without a great guide I probably wouldn't have landed it.. Cheers....A

Tell us about how you caught it, ie lenght of cast, shot placement and how you were able to set the hook when your knees were shaking so badly !!!!

So very true. Permit are so extremely skittish in skinny water.

What a remarkable specimen.
