See the white leading edge on its fin? That means it's a char so not a brown.
It's a lake trout. The bow has lakers in it?!?

I didn't think there would be lakers down that far. I caught it down towards McKinnon Flats.

I first thought it was a laker by the colours and markings but was told it was brown by some one far more experienced then me, but I thought I would ask.

0% chance that is a brown....

I caught a brook trout once in the Bow below Calgary a few years ago... you never know what you might catch.

I would concur that fish looks like a splake

Browns have flat-ish tails. Lakers have deep forked tails, similar to a Lake Whitefish.

There is the odd chance that there are Lakers all the way down to Carseland. They are caught below the Ghost dam and Bearspaw dam. In theory, they could make their way all the way to the SSR, if the silt doesn't bother their gills.

Splake look very similar to Lake trout, but their fins are usually quite orange, not olive like a Laker's.

Lake Trout.

Besides, IIRC Splake have never been stocked in AB (at least not in a very long time).

Definitely a laker.

I caught 3 in the bow last year, including 1 close to 30".

Haven't heard of them that far south though.

Great catch!!!

i looked at the uncropped pic, it has a forked tail.

could it be a bull that far down?

Definately a lake trout and not a splake, the dark lower lip and the gill plate that extends more vertical to the dorsal surface as opposed to the more rounded gill plate of the splake. Nice catch!

Saltmania
04-24-2012, 05:13 PM
Definitely not a bull. Bull trout have no spots or pattern on their dorsal fins and their colouring is very different. Being able to identify a bull trout properly is pretty important if you're fishing in Alberta. It's a laker.

That fish isn't a bull, but there have been some huge bulls caught below Calgary.

The tail is the biggest identifiable factor if you have a picture that shows that...

laker, i caught one at the south end of town last sunday. almost looks looked same fish. If it was not so far south. seen one a fair bit larger to. I know there in there and I fish the bow maybe 1/2 doz. times a year. I believe the fins are way to light to be a splake.

A splake like a tiger trout is a franken-fish. Developed in a hatcheryman's laboratory by crossing a brookie (speckled trout) and a lake trout. That's how they get the name "splake."
While the National Parks Service - back when they actually wanted to attract anglers to their parks - stocked a lot of crazy fish species, including splake, they haven't done any stocking for over 20 years. After they went politically correct and decided the parks were only for the elites.
But as other posters mentioned there are naturally producing lake trout populations in several of the impoundments on the Bow system.
Splake are pretty well sexually inert and don't reproduce. So for this to be a splake it would have to have been hatchery raised and introduced within the last five or seven years.
The provincial hatchery system doesn't raise them. So who else would?
It's a laker.

The only other fish it could be is a squib.

True trout, pacific salmon, Atlantics, sea trout, and browns have black spots.

Char have no black spots (though some have black markings).

It boggles my mind that people still cannot identify fish. Should a fish ID course be mandatory for a license?

Mmmmmm. Stuffed squid.

I like breaded squid rings better though.......

Never thought I would like squid. We were at friends place about 20 years back and she had a bunch of finger foods on the coffee table.

I kept picking at what I thought were onion rings with a nice breaded coating and almost polished off the bowl on my own. The hostess came out and said 'anyone for more squid rings'. 'Not for me says I" "I don't think I would like them".
She says "that's funny, you just ate most of the last lot"............they became an instant favourite!!!

It is a Taimen Trout from Mongolia. These are an invasive species on the Bow brought back by anglers who have travelled to fish coastal rivers in BC and have not washed their waders thoroughly when they return to Alberta. The eggs cling to the waders and have a long survival time out of water. Once in water again, they detach and the fish hatches.
The Taimen are migrating in the bilge water of container ships arriving in Vancouver from China and spawning in coastal waters.
Now, this is just a theory, but I think I may be proven right.......:thinking-006:
