Well the first netting of perch took place today and the results were good...Many large 10 to 12 inch perch were taken home by everyone with around 1000 perch netted...When I take pictures I ask if they want their faces blurred out since I post photos on forums... We reached an consensus where instead of blurring out the face, I won’t list the AO members names...If any other members would like to join us, we will be pulling the nets again Saturday May 5th.....

You guys might have better success lessoning the population if you try netting them before the spawn (thru the ice) in February or March. Even netting them in the fall might be more beneficial.

Based upon the previous 3 years we believe Spring concentrates them best for live trapping. gill nets will kill trout. We caught 1047 and a large number were ripe females. W need to catch more fishjng in winter and summer

I took home 11 big ones. They were all female and loaded with eggs, but only one of the 11 was ready to release the eggs.
In the first 2 pics, the grey mass in the middle of the fish pile is eggs and milt.

Thanks for clearing up his misunderstanding here.
As you mentioned, Lake Sundance in Calgary is a private man made community lake serving 15,000 people and 3,500 homes.
Perch were stunting and were illegally stocked to boot. We are just trying to make the best of a bad situation by reducing their population so that they can actually get catchable. It that means netting 5000 to 32000 a year...so be it. There are no natural predators and we can not add them...so nets make up the shortfall fishing can not do on it's own.

It has been on my mind for some time now. I even went so far as 4 years ago to see if I could get someone to do their masters thesis on this. Then they could of done a population estimate. While it would be very cool...I would not want to put any back just because of the volunteer effort involved.
Given the numbers we have caught in the past and the fact the nets only work a very small portion of the lake...if we caught 5000 last year in a month...how many could there be in the whole lake.
I estimate a low side of 100,000 to a high side of 500,000 combined for all the year classes.
Given there are only likely 3000 trout in the lake and should be able to sustain 9000 trout...the perch really do a number on the food resources.

Hi Jamie...I can give you some input on this one...They did a look at killing the lake off a few years ago and the costs were enormous (I can’t remember the actual numbers)…So if you look at managing the population by netting, you get a pretty good perch fishery…One thing that I like from the netting is all the people from this forum that I have met…I have fished many places in Alberta with many of the people and have brought many to Sundance to fish….

The board of directors are nervous and under-educated in regards to the use of rotenone to do a major fish kill. It is a perception issue more than anything. In addition, there is concerns about what to do with the dead fish.

Actually the costs to drain the lake $500,000. Cost to rotenone about $50,000. Rotenone scares some people so politics then come into play.
Plus Badback would be very upset sitting in a boat with me all afternoon and only catching 20 inch trout.:sign0161:
While I like the volunteering part...I can't do it all the time and forever so maybe this morphs into buying a large purse seine 100 M wide by 3 M high. Then drag the shallows in the Spring on a weekend to scoop up as may perch as possible. If very successful you may only need to do it every second year from a management perspective or less effor once a year.
Like with anything...just takes time and money. Some is easier to get than others.

Some people forget that while they have seen this discussion about illegal stocked perch lakes many times before, individuals like yourself are new to the situation.
While you jumped to the conclusion that something wrong was happening, we all on AOF need to realize not everyone reads every thread nor has everyone been around for a while.
That is why sometimes a quick search can help catch a person up...otherwise a quick update from time to time is not a bad thing.
It is hoped that repeatedly discussing the serious problems, illegal dumping of perch has caused in Alberta will eventually filter down to those responsible. Perch reproduce like crazy and over populate a pot hole or man made lake. Once that happens, food becomes limiting. Perch adopt an adaptive trait of stunting (halting growth at about 5 inches) where as any trout just slowly starve or have very poor condition factors.
Therefore while we could poison or drain the lake, there are cons to that course of action. The hardest course of action due to manpower requirements is to manage the perch by acting as a natural year long predatory relationship...by doing all the predating in 1 month of netting to control the perch population for the rest of the year.
With this in mind...I hope you understand the purpose of this thread. We also encouraging angling...but not enough angling success can be achieved to do the same thing and once they are stunted at 5 inches...nobody wants to catch them. So it is a catch 22...net so they get bigger...or do nothing and have a crappy trout and perch fishery.
Cheers

I have a couple questions and if they have been asked in other threads I apologise.
1. Do you get heat from fish loving home owners that say dont kill the perch?
2. Following one bad illegal stocking of fish with another is probably not good but what if you could introduce 10 or so Male pike to help clean up the perch, I know the trout would suffer with pike in there.
3. Do you catch trout as well in the trap and just release them?
4. Are the trout surviving to a larger size with the perch competing for food?
Good job on all of you that help to thin out the perch. I know its a guestimate but the numbers you suspect that could be in there just amaze me considering they started with only a few. Nice to see some good size perch showing up.

Nobody loves 4-6" perch.
You can't "stock" pike, plus the trout would be very scared of those sharks.
Some trout are caught in the trap, but the "sack" at the end is opened and the trout released.
The trout seem to be in better shape this year. Less perch means more scuds, dragonflies, damsels, mayflies and chironomids for all the remaining fish.
Sundancefisher

I have a couple questions and if they have been asked in other threads I apologise.
1. Do you get heat from fish loving home owners that say dont kill the perch? No. Most like seeing the trout rising...although I would say a good percentage never fish.
2. Following one bad illegal stocking of fish with another is probably not good but what if you could introduce 10 or so Male pike to help clean up the perch, I know the trout would suffer with pike in there. Fish eat the easiest thing first...just like you. If you have KFC or Pizza in the fridge you eat that first before defrosting a roast and cooking it for 5 hours. Same with predators...you eat the easiest thing to catch and swallow. Trout would be highly susceptible to ambush predators. I would envision a large number be selectively eaten over spiny perch.
3. Do you catch trout as well in the trap and just release them? A fyke it a fancy box trap...like a crab trap. They can get in easier than out. Then when we pull the trap we selective put the perch in a tub and the live trout are released. Occasionally trout can die if over stressed by heat etc. Also if the net gets a hole they can be gilled. Check out the video Badback attached earlier. It shows what it looks like pretty good.
4. Are the trout surviving to a larger size with the perch competing for food? Trout size and growth is dependent upon the available food. With 3000 trout in the lake on average a year...and over 50,000 perch removed via netting and fishing...you can imagine there would be an increase in food so the trout do better. We don't have condition factor data (Length versus weight ratios) but visually it has been obvious the trout are fatter and generally in better shape. As 3 years ago the perch were all mostly small 5 inchers...and now they are up to 12 inches...it shows their growth is also increasing again...another sign of more food.
Good job on all of you that help to thin out the perch. I know its a guestimate but the numbers you suspect that could be in there just amaze me considering they started with only a few. Nice to see some good size perch showing up. Likely the lake started with 50 young perch from Gull or somewhere. From there they breed out of control. As for numbers and rate of population increase...take just 10 perch...5 males and 5 females. Only females make the math however.
so 5 females reach say 8 inches...and reproduce...in year 4 each drop 30,000 eggs. Then figure only 1% survive. year 5 those first 5 are bigger and drop 60,000 eggs. 1% survive. year six 5 females are bigger and drop 150,000 eggs...1% survive. year 7 5 females are bigger and are 12-14 inches...and drop 200,000 eggs and 1% survive. year 8...females are big...and each drop 250,000 eggs 1% survive...
Now take 1% of 30,000 eggs times 5 females or 150,000 eggs...1% is 1,500 have of them females...each drop 30,000 eggs and 1% survive. and so one.
Pretty much sums up how fast they get out of control. You can't angle them fast enough in a trout lake. They will over populate.

Those "gibbled" perch look a lot like the gibbled guppies we used to have in our aquarium. They started out strong, but the longer they kept inbreeding, the worse they got. Their proliferation slowed down until they stopped reproducing all together. It makes me wonder if the perch problem will solve it's self eventually. Or if eventually all of the perch will be mutated freak fish. I imagine nobody is interested in adding some new bloodline in there. Probably illegal and counter productive anyways.

Don't worry about it. I have seen worse PM's over the years. Eventually he will read the whole thread.
In the meanwhile...no harm no foul.
As long as the message gets out that you should not transport live fish and illegally stock fish in Alberta.
Cheers

You have more patience that me Sun, and that is a good thing. Keep at 'em.

How many can make it out today at 6 pm? If I can get enough I may do that as opposed to Sat which is looking more miserable.
I can be there. But am only going to take enough Perch for a feed tonight. Will bring waders and show up a little early.

I'll be there. I can help on the boat

we should have enough to go forward then today. One more person for the boat and a few bonkers and counters and of course people to take all the perch home.
If I get the 4 of us for the boat that would be great.

I'll have to ask my dad if I can bring some back. It's been years since anyone in my family caught a perch.

how about fishing like the rest of us two lines and some luck.. anybody can net fish!! simply should not be allowed. I see you kept some real nice 2inch fish here??????
i agree 100%. what is the meaning of this. looks like a unfair slaughter. I will stick with my rod and some luck. have fun, if that is what you call that.
You guys can come out...just switch out a rod for a bonking stick!
If you saw how sharp the fins on a perch are...you would know they have a chance. One trout was eviserated by the perch fins.
If you can think of any way to make this even more unfair, increase the haul of perch people can take home tonight the better. If everyone can take 100 or more home each I would be tickle pink.
Cheers

P.S. Check out the video Badback posted to see how the nets go in and out. I am thinking of trying to make a better video.

Ouch!
Don't worry, there were lots of kids to partake in the 'bonking', good thing they were controlled on the table fair, the others didn't stand a chance against the gang of 7-13 year olds!
SO glad I brought fish gloves; now the hubbie is out cleaning them.
Thanks Jack&7 for the tip on the cleaning method.
Thank-you to Sundancefisher for organizing and running!
Sorry to hear that Jeff, hope it wasn't too serious and no one hurt. However, next time... We'll get some more perches.
All of the female in my batch of take-homes are already emptied. :sign0176:

Last week 1047
This week 707
Perch spawned sometime during the week. Fewer large females. Lots of tiny males. Still all the volunteers were able to take a nice feed home
It's probably about the same in numbers, except for the last net pulled because it only had 3 perches.
