Which ever weekend you can get out and it doesn't rain....rain makes those roads brutal.

Do you actually go ever? Or just make half a dozen threads each spring?

I have allways done best the first two weeks of May if you are seeing lots of deer it Bear time.. and fishing the creek mouths is great too.. i live in Hinton so the Athabasca area is great..

What I remember about my Swan Hills bear hunt is that since it is considerably higher than the surrounding area, Spring comes significantly later there. Something to consider.

The best weekend........If I only had one weekend for that area, it would be the last wk-end of May. Swan greens up a little later (probably 2 wks later than Whitecourt area.)

The most bears we ever see between Whitecourt and Swan are the last week of May....and I've been hunting bears in that area for 27 years...every year.

Lefty is correct, the roads can be bad and some are downright brutal if it rains. Keep in mind if it rains, try not to rip up the lease roads. People are making a living out there on those roads. A little consideration goes a long way. In fact it was a lease op that put me on my first bear out there way back.

My brother in law and I went out this weekend. We started driving the dirt road between Edson and Whitecourt. Made it half way before hitting snow a foot deep still. Turned around and went south of Edson. Nothing for snow left but the only set of tracks we found were from last year. Not even a hint of bears... At least it was good to get out a tent a couple of nights.

Anytime now you should be fine. I saw about a 6 foot black north of Whitecourt in the ditch of highway 43 this past Wednesday.
