I took a friend on his first ever hunting trip this weekend, After a long weekend of covering lots of miles with no bear sightings only seen tracks and the odd scat. I Decided to check the porcupines (305) out on the way home yesterday. We spotted this bear from about 500 yards on a hill top. Watched it for sometime. Then decided since it was a nice color phase bear that it'd do for my friends first harvest. Not a big bear i know. But the coat is what sold him on it. He had a great first hunting trip n is now officially hooked on the sport!!.

It's a mature bear if it wasn't with its mother.
I would have not worries about putting that one in my cooking pot.
I also shoot young deer, I could care less about big claws and antlers if it's in a legal zone.
If it was shot and he complained about shooting a young bear, well, that's different.

I know what's legal, but this one looks like it pushes the boundaries to the max. It is a nice color.

Always the Devil's Advocate. I make it a point never to comment on others kills, good or bad, unless there is a blatant reason, so my thoughts, must have been going through your mind, as well. :D

congrats on the first one, size isnt everything and i would not hesitate to take a smaller colour phased bear as they make a great rug and dont take up much space.

Yeah, has to be me. I guess I wouldn't have a problem with it, if this was in Cat's neck of the woods, where they've got the critters coming out of the Yin Yang, but down here the densities are comparatively low, we should be giving them a bit of a break by not robbing the cradle. I guess what REALLY set me off, was The mighty Sheephunter giving his endorsement. :D

shot my first bear as a rookie many years ago and did not know how to tell difference between young and mature bear. Killed one like OP (only black)about 5 feet long and felt bad although it was a learning experience.
It was the last day I could hunt for that season and nothing had come to my baits (in those days) so I went spot and stalk and had to take a long shot across a ravine with a 270 and got a one shot kill. Not only size dictates a memorable experience for a new hunter (I was pretty green in those days).
My next bear was over 500 pounds so redeemed me on the learning bear a couple years earlier.
My wifes favorite uncle came over from Germany for a visit and because he claimed to have always wanted to come to Canada to hunt bears when he was younger (he was nearly 70 then) I gave him the little bear rug to take back to Germany along with a quickly obtained export permit from a friend at Ontario MNR.
To him it was like I had given him a B & C bear he was so thrilled to have one in Germany. It is all in perspective.
BTW my first WT deer was no B & C deer either but he still hangs on the wall and is a trophy to me.
