not a personal attack on the OP, but This is why I believe that to acquire a fishing licence people should have to pass a fish identification test and general rules test. I know some people that have been fishing for 20 years (almost my age) and they don't have a clue what kind of trout they have caught.

LOL ok now the more I look at the identification page it is clear that its a whitefish but the "walleye" does show characteristics of both fish! The eyes are not "glazed" like the walleye and the fin looks more like a sauger because its not so rounded. Though the skin looks more like a walleye then a sauger. I am pretty amateur at the river though, just going by the alberta identification page......

Its no where near a sauger, its a typical N.s.r walleye

Yeah Cody I can agree I need more knowledge, but that's what I am trying to do by starting this post. I used to fish with my grandparents and uncle when I was much younger, last year my passion got re-ignited due to getting to fish a lake on Salt Spring Island B.C. last September. Trying to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can!

i may have been a bit harsh... but when it comes to fishing if you aenot sure...put it back...

I have had times when i caught a fish in new waters and had to take picture and go identify it... but mostly because it was very unexpected...

Turned out it was a cisco...

#1 is a whitefish

#2 is a saugeye, a hybrid of sauger and walleye displaying spots on the dorsal and reduced white area on the lower tail

Congrats, not many have caught a saugeye

Got this "Saugeye are a cross of the walleye and
sauger. The dark bars on the dorsal fin are the
best identifying characteristic for this fish. Sharp
canine teeth, dark blotches on the sides, and a
white tip on the lower tail also help identify the
saugeye."

Do the regs differ from walleye to sauger to saugeye? The problem is when they can't identify fish that look nothing alike. There are a lot of people that can't properly identify species of suckers, but they know they are suckers. When people can't tell the difference between a whitefish, perch, walleye, or pike...that is a serious problem.

You can keep sauger from the nsr.

"from Highway 22/39 (Drayton Valley) downstream to the Alberta/Saskatchewan border
River Only Open all year – Mountain Whitefish limit 5 over 30 cm; Walleye limit 0; Sauger limit 0 from Apr. 1 to May 14; Sauger limit 3 from May 15 to Mar. 31; Pike limit 1 over 63 cm; Burbot limit 10; Goldeye limit 10; Lake Sturgeon limit 0."

So I guess if you want to eat it its a sauger, if you want to release it its a walleye.

I was working between Inuvik and tuktoyuktuk a few years ago. Their is a herd of reindeer there that is owned by a family from Tuk. They were herded there a long time ago and originated in Europe. Anyway I asked an Inuit guy I worked with how to tell the diff between a caribou and a reindeer. He said because the reindeer were privately owned you could not shoot them. So if it was alive it was a reindeer. If he had shot it it was a caribou. Same thing here.

Where would a Saugeye fit in the regs?

I marked about a dozen 10-12' deep holes between the Goldbar launch and the Rundle park island. Everyone of them has walleye and sauger in them. Also caught a small burbot in one. Just waiting to get lucky and catch a sturgeon one day (fingers crossed).

In mid-september you can't keep the fish off around those ddeeper holes, and the water is at about 8 feet of visibility.

gladly, I'll be the first to admit that I have never seen a saugeye, yet I'm well aware of both species, my knowledge of identifying a fish would have told me to put it back ( as i would with any NSR fish), When people can't tell the difference between types of trout, or a walleye and perch, thats when we have a problem.

I'm not suggesting we throw pictures or tiger, splake, cuttbow, saugeye. A basic test to ensure the average fisherman is aware of the main differences between certain fish.

Nice Rocky that is a good sized one forsure.

As for the other fish, definitely not a Sauger because it has the white spot on the tail. I agree with the other guys that said Saugeye because it has the black spots on the dorsal fins (although they are not very clear).

Where on the NSR did you catch them? I've never caught a RMW out of the NSR. I've never caught a Burbot out of the NSR either but I saw a guy catch one tonight.

When it comes down to rocky mountain whitefish (admittedly rarer in Edmonton than say---Rocky ;) ) versus sucker, that is a pretty glaringly obvious case of misidentification.

They weren't not identifying the white, they were positively identifying it as a sucker. Could have ended up booted into the bushes if the person was different.

I am all down for a test. However, what do you make the law--100%, 90, 85, 75. At what point do you say: sure you got X wrong, but now you know, or, go home, read this, and come back tomorrow.

Same reason why guys over 65 should still need some sort of license. I am sure there are those that do not go out and get new regs every year. Paying a few bucks ensures they have to go through the process (even if they buy online, they go right past the regulations).

Ethics police??? What buisness is it of yours if the geek keeps any or all of his fish?.... He is well within his legal rights...!!
If you choose to not keep your fish that is your choice!!
And leave people who choose to keep theirs alone!
I know I know your just trying to educate the rest of us on caring for fish...
Like in your rainbow trout thread laying on the rocks....
I don't care if you lay your fish on the rocks but don't cast stones if you yourself are not without fault... It's not just about not bring able to Id a fish but others arnt trying to pick on everything you do or say... Cause they are intimidated of u attacking them.. You clearly have an issue understanding the differences in engaging in conversation and calling people out... For someone so new to fishing that make so many mistakes u sure have a lot of advise for the amature geek about the few things u have learned.... This is not conversation or discussion or education or whatever u wanna call it .... It is straight up abuse... I would advise you to take a bit more time thinking before u type as I have never herd suck verbal diahareea as what comes from u & never have I seen anyone write anything like "kill u for the wall" or "who's fillet knife is bigger" except for you and as it appears you have made a few enemies I'm sure a fee people are just waiting for u to slip up

Never seen a guy like to bitch, complain, and diminish people more when he handles fish like their nothing but yet seems to bitch at other people for it.

lol you keep going!!!!!

do you actually think that is the biggest burbot ever caught in the world!?! you dont think anyone has EVER in the HISTORY of the earth caught a bigger burbot?? its only the biggest burbot someone had to kill for no reason just to put on their wall. like cmon man give your head a shake.

The official world record for pike is roughly 55lbs, though there is cases reported from the 1920's in europe of 80-90lb pike. I'm sure this is the case with burbot and every other species. Not everyone cares about nor thinks about a WR when they catch a big fish. Some of us would just go "holy smokes thats a big fish!!!!!" (take some pics and let it go) without ever considering, hey If i kill this for no reason I can get it verified .

I'll let this end, but not if you keep going after I have tried to stop

Monger - seems a bit harsh to be attacking someone's friend for catching a world record fish or two...... anyone can do it right???? pretty lucky guys, both brothers seem to have luck .......... lol ...... your comments are misdirected.

Maybe a good job, congratulations would be the normal thing to do ..... but to deplete someones achievement is pretty classless. These guys put in time and effort and deserve recognition and respect.

Forgive me for saying so - I'd suggest you might be out of line.

So really you are doing the EXACT same thing I am doing.......voicing your opinion on a public forum........So anyone who has ripped into me or talked smack to me, you are no better then I am. No no no. I totally give him credit for catching all the fish he does. I'm not saying that. I was saying more along the lines of catching 30 20" walleye, and taking a picture of everyone of them just to prove he caught them. He's very skilled and I don't doubt that he's catching more fish then most of the members on here. But at what point do you stop taking hundreds of the same pictures. He's obviously got the skill, which he has proved. I'm not doubting that.

If thats the case whats the point of putting any trout or other species you catch up? We have all seen fish like that before. Now to be clear im not saying dont, I like all posts and it doesnt bother me if they look the same. Its a fishing forum and if you go fishing and catch fish that are the same as your last post, good on ya! Post em up who cares good posts with lots of pics are what make this forum awsome. And if we all start worrying if our posts look like another then its just going to go downhill real quick. Point being if you go fishing catch fish and take pictures, post em.

yeah but BGSH thinks that because he posts the most pics, he catches the most fish.....also he thinks if you dont post 100 pics of every fish like he does that means you dont catch any fish at all........and you say its ok as long as its not the same fish for 5 pics.........go look at some of his threads, literally 3-5 pics of the exact same fish, there is 15 pics but of only 3 fish, then he says he caught 45 that day.

back to original question: No doubt what first fish is, and second is saugeye. As with all hybrids they can take more or less traits from each species, thus none of two saugeyes will look exactly the same. But no walleye will have black spots on dorsal fin and no sauger will have white spot on the tail or no black markings on anal fin. Thus - it is saugeye or wallger:)
