Anyone been out that way lately?

I know the season opens on the 19th and am wondering if there is still ice on the lake and if so how much.

THANKS

Got everything but the boat!

WOW you just made my day :sHa_shakeshout: For some reason, I taught that Minnewanka opening was somewhere around June 15th.

I'm in Canmore, I'll go check the ice situation on Minnewanka early next week and keep this thread updated till the 15th.

Thanks a lot. I am sure it will be open but you never know. Lat year it opened a week later because of ice but I think we should be good to go for next Friday.

Hoping and hoping this is my year to finally hook up with that elusive 20 pounder. 12 is my largest todate so there is for sure room to improve.

I've hit minnewanka from the canoe on a calm day. You can't really stray out of the west end of the lake past the point unless you have some real horses, and my skinny arms don't rate too high.

Wind comes up in an instant and is relentless. Might consider a flotation/survival suit if you're in a pontoon.

thx for the tip BeeGuy. ya i will definately keep a good escape route in mind, and bring a life jacket, but you probably would need a survival suit in that water...lol

Water temp at Ghost this week has been steady at 41 degrees so i am gonna say Minnewonka whould be in the mid 30's. Damn cold even with a survival suit.

Temp. is the key, once the temp hits 50 degrees the lakers go deep and the fishing for me ends. Ususally sometime in early July.

Beeguy is right I have been on that lake several times. Can start out as a really nice day and all goes well, then a storm comes out of no where. Like he says a lifejacket is a must and maybe some flannel uinderwear. What i am saying is be careful.

Yes you can.

You can catch fish too, it's just not terribly easy.

If there is any time, it is now!

I drove up there today and all the ice had melt. It was cold up there but no wind. Hopefully it gets warmer up there by Saturday

I should be there Saturday after lunch and early Sunday morning. Look out for a blue aluminium boat.

Anyone know what permits I need to fish Minnewanka with a boat ? Might have a ride out there in a week or so .

You need a Banff National Park license. Your Alberta fishing permit is not valid in a National park. It's 34.30$ and valid for 365 days or you can buy the daily license for 9.80$ Regulations are different as well. You are allowed barbed hooks but not lead tackle (sinkers, jigs, lures and flies) under 50 grams. You can check http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/visit14a.aspx for more info

Correct me if I'm wrong but is a Jasper park license also valid in Banff?
