Super Dave and I arrived at Dolberg about 9:30 and were quite surprised by the number of people. We launched the boat and began trolling clockwise around the lake. Dave had on a big, dark fly and I had on a small Rapala Rainbow. My reasoning for the Rapala was since the lake was stocked May 4 with 6-8" rainbows, the big boys would be feeding on these little trout.
Half way between the first and second beaverlodge, I had a good, solid strike. The trout surfaced 30 yds behind the boat and was jumping around for a few seconds before snapping my 8 lb line and taking off with my little Rapala. Lucky for me, Super Dave had another Rapala just like mine and offered it to me.
We just started moving again and playing out our lines when Super Dave hooked into a fish. Turned out to be a 12 incher so we released him.
The wind was 20 kph with gusts up to 40. The Minn Kota Traxxis 55SC moved the 14 Ft Lund around effortlessly. Wasn't fast by any stretch of the imagination but fine for trolling into the wind as readily as with or across it.
After a few passes around the lake, I switched the little Rapala for 2 sizes larger. Had a few hard hits but nothing hooked solid. Super Dave had on his little rapala Rainbow and was hooking and landing fish. He then switched to a Mepps spinner and I switched back to his little Rapala.
The Mepps were running much deeper than the little Rapala and Super Dave was hooking weeds often enough to switch away from the spinner. He put on one of my Rapalas (I don't know what species it's intended to mimic) which was the same small size as the one of his I was using. Both of us were hooking and losing fish as well as hooking and landing fish. Super Dave actually caught a 6" stocker and I a 8". The biggest fish of the day was a 17 incher Super Dave caught. Along with the 17 incher, we kept 7 14 inchers.
We often chatted with other fishermen as we passed by each other. It was interesting to learn some were catching a good number of trout yet others were not.
As a side not, we met up with a old hunting buddy of mine who was doing well catching trout on a small Hotshot.
Unfortunately, Super Dave forgot my camera in the truck so weren't able to take any photos. Super Dave will attempt to blame the forgetting of my camera on me but, as we all know, when in doubt, the FIL is always right.
All and all a great day out on the water. Can't wait to do it again next weekend. I've a hunch I might be taking a 4 day long weekend.
