I was always told suckers are bony and no good for eating....

I was also told same thing about rocky mountain whitefish and the pike minnow (AKA squawfish)....

Has anybody actually eaten these to let me know what they are like?

Whenever i have caught thenm i have usually released them immediattely and sometimes even into the water....

Of corse drilling them with an arrow precludes release survival...

I know I used to arrow Carp quite regular in Kamloops and never kept them and found out that the Asians just love them for food but never tried them myself.... I imagine there is a lot of meat on a 20lb carp....

When I was a kid in Southern Onterrible, we had an older couple who used to can them in mason jars. As I recall, they tasted exactly like canned salmon.

I've tried Northern Pikeminnow from Carp Lake poached. Not so great. Flesh was fine but very bony and fine, soft bones so would be hard to fillet boneless. Canned or smoked would probably be just dandy. I like canning trout. The bones dissolve completely or soften so they're easily edible.

Just letting you guys know.

I find the increased discuss in sucker fish incredibly refreshing and encourage it immensly.

Also, I heard if you pickle or smoke Suckers it makes them platable- And the Fish patty thing might not be so bad.

If all else fails you can always just burry them in your garden. They're supposed to make amazing fertalizer.

But I'm more in favor of just letting them go. :snapoutofit:

Like many other fish, if they come from good clean water the meat is actually very good for all three of them.

To be honest, if suckers and squawfish didn't have all the annoying little bones, they would easily rival walleye and perch for the quality of the meat. I've heard of many locals say that canning them work well but I haven't tried it yet.

Rocky whitefish are very good and they don't have the little bones. Awesome smoked.
