Went to go get the boat ready for firing with my brother this weekend, got a horrible surprise when we pulled the spark plugs.
A mouse crawled all the way up the leg, into cylinder #1, and made a nest in there. That's bad enough, but the damn thing peed in there all winter, so the cylinder bore is now rusty as hell.
Engine is a '98 2-strike Optimax 150. I've come to the conclusion that I'll have to pull the motor off the boat, pull the powerhead out, strip it, and send the block to get it re-sleeved.
Anyone have any experience in this sort of thing? I can probably handle stripping the motor myself (although if anyone knows someone who would do that for a decent price, I'd love to hear it). Any suggestions for a good shop to re-sleeve the cylinder?

Pull the head off, and try cleaning the nest and use oil and wd-40 to clean the rust. Maby let the cylender soak in wd-40 or diesel for a day or two, but i would be try to trac the way he got in and clean everything.

Sorry, forgot to mention. I did pull the head off already, that's how I realized how extremely rusted the piston was. I tried to scrub it a bit with penetrating oil... but it wouldn't be having it.
Maybe I'll try diesel, that might work better for rust removal.

My dad had found a 1923 hartpar tractor once, it was seized. Filled the 2 cylinders with diesel for a month and then broke the pistons free. Filled it up with fuel and turned the hand crank. Guess what, she fired up. Diesle will do the job. Use a scotch brite pad (like a dish cleanig pad) to clean up the rust after soaking in deisel for a while. I would guess you only need a day or two of soaking.
Tip!
allways squirt a little oil in the cylinders at the season end and turn the engine over once or twice to spread it around. Will prevent rust from forming from condensation. I have a 115 merc from 1979 that still runs strong to this day. Will still pull more than 4 skiers. Have pulled up to 6.

Good advice.
Acetone mixed 50/50 with ATF. You won't have to do any scrubbing just let it soak in and wipe clean and repeat if nessisary.
CLR the household cleaner works too but I don't now how it would react with the alloys in the aluminum piston
