Does anyone know if the ice is off the lake? And are the lakers still deep?

Not much discussion here about Cold Lake lately, Anyone know if the ice is gone yet? Anxious to get the boat wet,

Ice has been gone for a long time. Fished it May long weekend with no ice on the lake. Caught 6, 2 down 90 feet in 150 feet and 4 down 150 feet in about 200 feet of water.

Cold Lake Ice never really leaves the lake. I think it sinks!!

I ran up last night after work and the fish were running in the 60-80 foot range. And I got skunked....

We cancelled our trip up there also because of the weather.
Its the wind on those big lakes that will get you .

Stally keep your eyes on your fishfinder and look for bait balls, and biggger arches nearby, below, or way below. If you have dual frequency ability on your fishfinder, you should be able to see your downrigger ball, etc. You should also be able to see the big arches move up to take a run at your lure. If you see fish moving up to take a look, you want to speed up or turn your boat to change the speed of your lure to get the chasing fish to commit and bite. For most consistent results you'll want to be around the thermocline, which you should be able to see on fishfinder cranked, at somewhere between 30 and 50 feet deep, over whatever depth of water. This should also b where you see the baitballs. best colours are chartreuse when sun isnt directly overhead, and silver when sun directly overhead in sky. Old favourites the FST in chartreuse with pink spots, my favourite big flatfish in silver, chartreuse, etc.Thanks. I was planning on trolling spoons and crank baits. Thanks again.

you can also longline with silver and chartreuse plugs or spoons running around 10 feet deep, harder to find fish to start but check with guys in store at Marina, they should be able to help with a starting point, wont see fish on finder but if you find em should be a consistent bite, if you wanna learn about jigging for lakers (few do this in open water at Cold Lake), check out a recent article at outdoorcanada.ca, lots of good info in there,

Do any of you fish for Walleye in Cold Lake?If so what to use and where to start.I have not ever fished that lake.

There are no walleye in Cold Lake....I repeat no walleye in Cold Lake...just Lake trout and the odd white sucker...

How rough does it get on cold? I have a 17' Deep v boat. Smokercraft Pro angler 172 with 115. Should handle it pretty good eh?

I have a 17' Lund with a 115. I was on it last year in about 3-4 footers and the boat can handle it, the only problem is the waves are wider apart on cold lake. As you are going down one the other is ready to come over your bow on a 17'. Not saying you can't do it, but it is no fun fishing in and it was only moderately windy that day. Cold lake demands a lot of respect.

I have a 12 foot aluminum powered by a 34 lb thrust trolling motor. Used with a little common sense it works fine but then that seems harder and harder for people to come by these days. Just watch the weather and know when to call it quits...and no, I don't head out into the big part of the lake, just the brothels and ***** houses ;) !!

yeah i'm not real keen on rough water. Got caught in a pretty good one up in Cree Lake Sk. Was pretty intense, but we made it back to camp in a 16' guide boat with a 25 hp merc!:Lightning:Yikes don't wanna go through that again! Might be a little bit of a chicken **** now?

Ice is still on. Lakers are all over the place right now, depth wise that is. But if you want real big ones, go deep. If you want good action fish surface to 75ft ish. Right now though is prime time to get the other species(pike and walleye), so try for them too while out here. The lake has been mirror like the last few days.

Lake is huge and round. 300+ feet deep. If its windy , it gets rough just like any other lake. Not many places to hide.

Treat this lake with a lot of respect!! Watch the weather and plan carefully; I'd hate to be at the north end when a huge wind comes up...no matter the type of boat. This would make for a long tedious ride back to town.

been hitting them pretty good over at the flemish cap in 80 ft of water on the trusty old manistee spoon, managed to C/R 7 of those greasy bast$%#@s in a few hours, lake was calm, the cap is still producing..
