In 1972 my dads NAIT biology class organized a school trip to do a float on the Red Deer River. Every June since then we continue to reunite from all over Alberta and do the float. Its my absolute favorite favorite trip of every year :).

This year the water was the highest and fastest I have ever seen it. The weather turned out to be a lot better then we had thought with tons of sun showers and barely any wind. This year about 15 canoes/kayaks/pontoons launched on the river. Two canoes flipped from trying to beach in the fast current but everyone would race over and help out. Majority of the float we all tie up and create a floatella but when the wind started to pick up we all break apart and start paddling. I had my little motor on my pontoon and I noticed the canoers were getting further and further ahead of me and at one point for about 45 minutes I could not see a soul infront or behind me.. started to get a little freaky lol.

Some of us did a little bit of fishing on the river but the water was like chocolate milk and very fast so fishing was a little short lived. I do have some pictures of the float though so I figured Id share some of them with you guys.

Very nice pics, looks like a great time.

This is not criticism, there should always be a canoe trailing the slowest canoe or craft,,, just my 2 cents.

Awesome,, what are those yellow water craft,, the ones they are using the paddle with 2 blades?? :sHa_shakeshout:

They can only paddle 1/2 as good as a canoeist, Thats why kayakers have 2 blades on their paddles.

Would not the slowesr canoe still be the canoe trailing the slowest canoe?

Ya Im actually not to sure, I've seen all sorts of watercrafts on this trip. Everyone switches it up for new challenges and different experiences. I had a canoe waiting for me there so I could base my choice according to the weather.

The slowest canoe is usually followed by a faster canoe with more experience. The lead canoe and the sweep canoe (slowest) tend to be the most seasoned and trained.

Once again just my 2 cents.

Ya that sounds like common sense too. This was a pretty easy float but I remember on the float in 2008 we got stuck in a rain storm and there was only 5 canoes. My buddy had minimal canoe experience and was zig zagging from bank to bank trying to fight through the wind. But ya with only 5 canoes on the water that year we stayed close.
