So the girlfriend is kind of hooked on pike fishing and bought herself a heavy action rod with a spincast reel, she's not to good with a spinning reel. It came with cheap 15lb test line but its thick and well, just cheap stiff line. How does braided line work on a spin cast in the 15lb test range? Any suggestions on type or brand

You should pike fish 30lb braid or higher. Must be this high to get the diameter up so it works well on the reel. Mono line is okay in 12 to 14 lbs.

30 lb sounds good, the bigger the better lol. How does braid wear on those reels, any issues?

I bought a new shimano sahara, spooled it up with 30 pound powerpro braid. Great stuff, takes a little getting used to as you tend not to set the hook as hard - no stretch. First time in the tube this year was last weekend, loved it.
You can buy the 125 yard spools I believe - I generally use some good mono as a backing, surgeons knot to join then fill the rest of the spool with braid. I've never had a fish drag me into the mono yet.

this is funny. might as well use steel line. set your reel as tight as can be and drag a half lb fish in, to guarantee a catch..... possibly Not Debard your hook
Set your drag right and 14 lb braid is fine....

I find drag is everything when using braid - the line is so sensitive.
Braid has virtually no stretch to it – and comes with problems for those switching from mono. Here’s a few tips and drag setting is the key to effective braid use.
- Do NOT set your drag to maximum – just because you’re using a very thin 20 pound test line, you’ll probably lose more fish by tightening your drag. If anything, lighten your drag – it’ll help with setting the hook and allow you to break the habits you had with mono. Braid has no real give, and something has to give when you’re fishing.
- Do NOT set the hook with braid the way you did with mono – braid is so sensitive that the fish most times will hook itself up due to lack of stretch. Jerking your line the way you did with mono will probably rip the hook out of the fishes mouth (injuring the fish) and resulting in lost fish instead of a hook up.
- Light to medium action rods are probably the best for braided lines – they allow for the flexibility you’ll need when fishing.
Once you get used to braid, you'll never go back to mono. I had to switch up from braid once at a lake, all i had was mono - couldn't believe the slop and stretch when trying to set the hook. Even pulling through the weeds is different.

For a spincast braid must have same line diameter as the 12 - 15 lb mono otherwise the pin will not be able to pick up line, nothing to do with break stength just the mechanics of the reel. At least 30lb braid is a must and tension is needed on the line to spool tightly.
HAVE A GOOD ONE !!!
I wouldnt try braid on a spincast reel, even on a spinning reel that does not spool evenly it can cause problems. Never seen a spincast reel that spools evenly enough, I also think it could chew up the reel as there is no rollers on the bail. 15 lb mono is plenty and I would probably go down to 10. Quality 10lb line will break off less than cheap 15 lb line and going down in diameter will help you put on more line on the spool, a bonus as most spincast reels dont have much for line capacity. I have 6lb test on my daughter's spincast so I dont know why you guys think you need large line diameters.

I just bought a light medium 6'6" rod and a pflueger spinning reel, I want to set it up for walleye, what type and line size should I put on? I was originally leaning towards a 10lb mono, but am wondering if braid is the way to go??

I'm running 15lb powerpro on my Pflueger Patriarch, and all my Shimano Stratics.... also a mono or flourocarbon leader.
But to the OP's question, I wouldn't run a braid less than 30lb diameter on a spincast reel. The girlfriends son is 5 years old and running 30lb powerpro on his highend diawa spincast and it works better than mono ever could on a spincast.

As you are specifically asking about a spincast reel and not a spinning reel, I would just get some reasonable mono. I would not use braid in a spincast reel, unless it was a model specifically made for braid. The normal spincast reels just use a pin as a pickup and will be cut through by the baid.
Besides I have caught hundreds and hundreds of large pike on 10-14 lb Trilene XL mono with spincast reels and had no problems. And the stuff is cheap.

Agreed... I know nothing about trout fishing... but when it comes to Pike I've caught my share.. I normally never go higher than 8lb test even if I am fishing pike.. just throw a steal leader on so they don't chew through it... If fishing strickly pike, I'd say go with the 10-14LB mono like mentioned above... lighter line makes things a lot more fun... I landed a 29lb Pike on a 4.5 ft microlite spinning rod and 4lb test... Best fight of my life.. took me a good 30+ mins to bring it in. I like to have something versitile that I can use anywhere and on anything.. so 6lb seems to be my go to... I've got fish anywhere from an oz to 30lbs on 6lb test... set your drag properly and don't get too frantic when you've got a fish on and you're fine.
