Nice colours. I've never caught one with anything but a touch of pink.

I should have a few more pics from the beaver/Holmes river in bc and sadly never took any pics from the Ram or the 3 footers from the flathead.

They're ugly compared to a brookie - specially a fall brookie! And dumb as a sack of hammers. Anyone can catch bulls.

Kinda like a pike or walleye, but better looking and more interesting from a natural history perspective.

lol...anyways I already posted a pic but for you guys who never ate one I can tell you that they ain't so good..kinda like lake trout or should I say wet sawdust..:(

And before anyone gets thier knickers in a bunch I'm talking early 80's when they were still legal to keep.:)

Still legal in bc, ate one not too long ago.

They are like most fish, the quality is dependent on where they are caught and the time of year.

Well I'll say sorry to everyone but "tight" seeing as he has to get personal - but I just couldn't resist. You see bears aren't the only thing I like baiting. You'll have to admit it was as easy as dropping a fly in front of a bull. Nothing to getting a rise and a strike! Was just haveing some fun at your expense.

I honestly would rather catch a brookie cause even mature bulls I find are pretty easy to catch. Just like some got upset I get upset with this new brookie "kill licence" on some of the southern watersheds. I hate "management" that values one fish species over another. I can say I've never seen it work anywhere it is tried. So this little roll cast into the eddy was as much a reaction to that as anything.

Do you understand the entire problem with the watersheds and brookies? I'd be pretty worried as an albertan fisherman, if native populations of cutthroat and bull trout were being displaced and eaten out of house and home by brookies. The brookies hybridize with the bulls, creating a fish that doesnt reproduce very well later on, hurting the gene pool and just simply lowering the reproduction rate. The brookies also can reproduce at a smaller size/younger age, meaning the population explodes compared to cutthroat and bull trout. Also brookies spawn in the fall along with bull trout causing the first issue i stated which in turn excludes them of death/poor survival rate caused by run off. Cutthroats spawn in the spring, and their survival rate is much lower per every year they spawn while the conditions are awful. Its not favoring one species over the other, but if you're against it the elimination of brookies in native trout waters, you're favoring brook trout over cutthroat and bull trout. To put it simply, brook trout are invasive. There are so many stunted populations of brook trout every where. Eliminating them from creeks that they have taken over, is a GOOD thing. They are a nuisance.

My rant is over.

I agree... Study was done last year at the UofL on brook/bull fry and which out-competes in different scenarios... Brooks destroy... literally eatting small Bullies out of house and home... Taking them out and helping our native fish population recover is what should be done..

When I was younger I caught a huge Bull Trout in BC... at that time they were still considered a Dolly Varden as in that watershed both are found.

We loped haed and tail off and cooked him in the BBQ basted like a turkey with brown rice and seasoning....

Yum... Slurp... Gone even by those who don't care to eat a lot of fish!...

There have been plenty of scenarios that i have experienced where you can drift a fly past a bull 1000 times and he just will not take it. It is the weirdest thing.

Bull vs Brook trout debate, Unless you're talking BIG brook trout, Small brookies easily come to being the dumbest fish. I've watched brook trout eat pine needles. That in my mind, is pretty stupid.

Why brookies look way nicer in all seasons tbh nothing special about a bull or cutt i say let nature take its course if bullys dont survive then so be it there will be plenty of brookies to be caught.

This doesnt even dignify a response.

Thats just a silly thing to say....

Why?!?

Hmm.. lets think about this....

Brookies are NOT native..... Bull Trout are... They are threatened because of people like you who think stocking or catching Brooks would be more enjoyable... (and because of our never-ending degredation of fisheries)If you want to catch Brooks than go elsewhere, Albertas Bull Trout are here to stay (I hope).

Early naturalists had this to say about the fish: Bull Trout are by far the most active and handsome of the trout, they live in the coldest, cleanest and most secluded waters. No higher praise can be given to a Salmonid than to say, it is a charr. (Jordan and Evermann 1896)

I know you've got your opinion, and I know you're mostly havin' a good old fashion troll. :) I'll simply raise the point that in our warmer eastern slope creeks, the Brookies are so successful that they outcompete other species, and then start stunting. This means that that the forage base is great enough only to allow fish to reach a certain size. So, if you really like catching 50 4" Brookies/hr, then keep up your argument. However, by using anthropogenic selection against an anthropogenically introduced species, you not only improve the quality of fishery (ie size of fish) of indigenous species, but of the Brook trout too. Much like Perch, you'll NEVER eliminate them entirely, but you can apply selective pressure to modify their effect on an ecosystem.

So, what is it gonna be, 3" Brookies all the time, or a larger, more diverse fishery for Bulls, Cutts, and Brookies? Food for thought.
