Info on Flashers

I'm interested in using flashers while trolling in my canoe.

I have very little experience in this beyond some experimentation.

Please provide some pointers all you pro trollers.

Can I run a crankbait behind a flasher or is it going to spin or not run well?

if your flasher has a rudder, it should work fine at a canoe pace and not twist everything up. At any faster speed and it sure has some drag on the line. I have tried this a few times just to see, it worked ok, but I couldn't tell you if it worked any better than just a crank by itself.

Basically, I want to get these down 30-35' and help the fish find my lures in this silty mountain water.

I'd prefer to run crankbaits. I guess I'll see how they run in the morning.

ok, here's what I got

first one is a kelp cutter style flasher
other 3 are traditional rotating flashers.

im pretty sure where your going and that kelp cutter works very well there.

We use Koot techniques for Ab lakes with good success.

Although we get fish on the traditional Okie flashers with hoochie or fly the kelp cutter and spoon or fly is better Laker candy

We also run the kelp cutter with a white tube with a mylar insert or hockey stick . We never run the kelp cutter in full rotation, just a wagging the tail motion.

You may find the smaller cutter from Abe and Al and Krippled Herring will work better at times

although ive tryed many times to pull a crank behind them its never as good as the above

I figure I'd go about 6-8' so that in the off chance we catch a fish, we can net it more easily than if we had a longer leader.

How far behind the flasher do you run a lure? I see anywhere from 4-10'+

varies on fish's additude....shortest i run is 22 inches, longest is 4 feet

I figure I'd go about 6-8' so that in the off chance we catch a fish, we can net it more easily than if we had a longer leader.

You dirty water dog you.

The water might be muddy, but the fish are still hungry.

When you get the chance, buy the "In Fisherman" ....."Freshwater Rigs and Riggings". There are some really cool charts on different flashers, sizes, and rigs for matching them.

If your fishing for bows or other trout, Use a thingy, I can't remember the name. Its similar to a flasher but has about 5 - 1.5" flasher things and set your hook about 3 to 4 ft behind it. Similar to this but more flasher things.

I find this works great for slow trolling of trout.

Everything seemed to run well. We only ended up having 3 hrs on the water, so I never tried running a crankbait behind the kelp cutter.

We did try trolling a smelt, and used some spoons which all seemed to work well.

I'll give the crankbait a shot next time.

IT wasn't terribly unwieldy running the flasher off the downrigger on the canoe. Could see it being a productive method once conditions improve, or on other lakes.

Anyone use flashers for pike?
