Finally upgraded to a large arbour fly reel (5 weight, if it makes any diff). I bought the reel without backing or line. Does anyone know about how much backing is required on this type of reel?

You should have a manual with it, it should say there. If not, look up the reel on the net. Most manufacturers will list line capacities.........

It will make a huge difference depending on what type of fly line you put on after the backing. A floating double taper (very thick) will take up WAY more space than a thin full sinking line. I actually use 7/8 reels to hold my double taper 6wt floating lines plus the backing.
Weight forward floating lines take up much less space than double taper lines, and therefore you can hold a lot more backing behind them.

A very general guideline would be between 100 and 150 yards, or approx. a third of the reel capacity of backing.

Hope it helps,

Thanks guys..there was nothing in the manual, and on the Sage site it speaks to 100 yards with WF-6-F (it's a 5-6 reel) which is not what I am using. Will try a 100 yds with WF-5-F and see how that works.
