You want the meat scraps for some smell....but the MAIN thing you want is something to feed the bears in your bait....they need as much fiber and stuff to cleanse out the system and really start to fill up....and as much as they like the meat scraps, the main thing they want is some feeds, grains, grasses, pastries, etc...

Good suggestions for 'filler' in bear baits are oats, popcorn, dohnuts, grains, dog food, etc......I like making a really sugar-filled mix with lots of good food once the bears start hitting the baits.

As for grease, some fast-food places will give you some old stuff...it will smell great and should work to keep em coming back. I like it spread on the ground to move the smell around with bears stepping in it and creating scent trails for you.

Another good tip...keep the hole in the barrel small enough that the bears have to work for their food, but big enoug that they can still get stuff out....

Popcorn works really well. I know one guy that buys it from a theatre supply company I think it's a little over $50 for 50 lbs of popping corn. Pop 'er up in a turkey fryer and away you go! Careful with how hot the cooking oil gets though, it can be a fire risk! I've thought about trying rice out as an alternative but I can't find a cheap source for that anymore. Dog's love rice, so by extrapolation bears should too. You may also want to try putting some dry horse molasses into the mix too for some sweetnes.

Talk to the owner of a Restaruant, got mine trained, he starts saving his fryer oil this time of year without me asking.

A word to the wise, sealed 5 gallon pails, then put in two garbage bags.

Not trying to take over the thread but if anyone needs used deepfryer oil.....I'm able to get as much of it as I want. I have a friend that owns 6 or 7 concessions and offers it to me every year. Let me know and I can grab a few big jugs a day. I am in Red Deer.
