Me and a buddie want to build a camp for next year. Some guys iv`e talked to say it has to be taking down after hunting season .I wan`t to put it on crown land and have hunted there for 4 or so years.Ive seen the same tent and plywood camps about 2km from the area i`d like to put a camp and there up year round. Is this legal?Or are they just getting lucky and not caught?I don`t go in others camps so i`m not sure if there trapers or what but they have bow targets and hanging poles so i just guess there hunters.Any advice or help would be great. Thanks Jay

we've been told to move before.......you can't camp here in the same spot this long. however i know other guys that have a camp way back in where no vehicales are aloud. I've always wanted to go back in after season to se how much is removed????? or how much is just taken down and stashed and re-set up each year???
So as far as I know you can't, but some do. I even found a stash of mountain climbing gear at the base of the mountain above treeline.

As far as I know you are not allowed to leave any PERMANENT structure on crown land. Not sure if a hunting camp would qualify as permanent though.

I know for sure the guys i`m talking about don`t even pick up there targets and there camps are there year round.I`m not gonna tell on them,But if it`s not aloud then i`ll take mine out at the end of hunting season. Thanks
You can't have a permamant camp or a ton of guys would do it. This also means you have to actually be using the camp aa well or it will be taken down for you by forestry or F and W. People leave the tent frames and tables around and stuff like that and just come in and put the tent up when they want to use it. I really wouldn't want my stuff left there for the critters and others to steal while I wasn't there.

here a link to the srd page with the rules for random camping on public land...
http://www.srd.gov.ab.ca/lands/usingpublicland/recreation/pdf/07_Random_Camping_Final.pdf
No permanent structures, 14 days max and leave it clean. Whenever I random camp I try to leave the area in better shape than I found it.

I have seen a couple of warnings nailed to trees beside "camps" from srd or CO's, whoever looks after this kind of thing. It read ...you have 30 days to remove this structure... I have heard and this may be rural legend type stuff, that they can and will burn down some of these types of structures. As a guy always on the look out, when I am beating around the bush doing my oilfield service job, for a potential new camp spot it annoys me to see guys put up permanant type structures on crown land. It is there for everybody, I know there is alot of it but I dont think anyone has a right stake a claim to thier own piece of it for more than a couple weeks at a time.

how do you "find" a camp to use..or a spot to use. are you allowed, on crown land, to just find or pick a spot and get to work making it campable?? or do you have to get a permit etc....

I've had the sign, I've had SRD burn the cabin down. I've also learned a few things.
You cannot have a permanent structure on public land.
Couple options:
1. Get to know the trapper in the area you hunt. If the structure has his trap line number on it they can't touch it.
2. Put your building on 4x4 posts (skids) it is then not permanent.
I'm split on this one. I agree public land is public and we don't need 1 million 2 bit shacks out there. But I also see the purpose of having shacks if you the only one in an area, to avoid packing 1000lbs of crap in.
I think it should come down to how often it is used. Some people I know go to there shack every second week all year. In those instances I think it is ok.

Hope this does not start something, but if someone is out at a camp, cabin... and they want it to be there year round it's my opinion it is time to pony up the cash for your own property. It is public land, just because you go there every second weekend does not make it yours, or give you the right to put up structures that make it seem that it is. I know guys get attached to "thier" spot but that why I always have a plan b incase someone is in "my" spot when I get there.

I've been out around Jackfish/Baptiste area west of rocky, and there are a spots we stop at for lunch are guide camps (ferriers?). so how is it that these spots, with shelters are able to be set-up and left all year round? i've never seen a trappers tag or any sort of information on them. They get a lot of use during the hunting season, and during the summer lots of people stop there for lunch.

Does this include this part?

Never said it did, that is why you get to know your local trapper, he/she does not use there shed 365dys/yr. Maybe they will allow you to put a shed up
on there line (for them to use as well) or use theirs.
Please read the posts before flappin your gums:wave:

300WSM I did not intend to offend you.
I believe trappers are restricted to how many structures and there size along there line, Any trappers out there would know. Otherwise you can see the abuse it would receive.
If people were allowed to have a structure if the came every 2 weeks can you imagine the amount of shacks there would be.
If your the only one in the area. Well how big is that area? 1 square mile 10, 100? And how is one to know who else is out there.
Sorry all that just has abuse all over it.

One finds other shacks by being familiar with the area, driving around on quad in summer, sleds in winter.
In the area I'm in it is 500sq km or 50 km by 10km crown land. There is 2 other shacks in the area. One is abandoned (40 yrs old) the other is used during trapping season occasionally. Our is open (but latched/ not locked) 24/7; 365 there is a sign in book/journal. Off hand have had many guests over the years. The only thing ever bad to happen is someone burnt all the wood, but a quick chainsaw/axe we were back to normal. Couple years back some sledders left a six pack for us, unfortunately it froze before we got it.
In general people leave it better than when they get there. We close up the garbage and keep it contained. We haul that out when needed.

Yeah hear what your saying. Years ago there was a cabin that my father used to take me to. Fully stocked with food and all. They had a coffee can that you could put money in or leave a donation of food or whatever. This was in Bragg Creek.
Times have changed. Drastically.
My buddies trap line cabin in BC is never locked either. They just break the door down. Some steal some don't. Gunshots etc.
Goin say too never put a spring on the inside of the cabin door. The kind that closes behind you, bears get in and can't get out. The rip the cabin up pretty good.

Never had any issues. Overall good people in our area!
Touch Wood
Jay, if it were that simple none of us would have to buy property to build our cabins on, we could use crown land.
If the cabins you speak of don't belong to trappers I would say the builders are lucky and haven't been caught YET, 'yet' being the key word here.
BTW, nice moose avitar!

According to SRD's website, temporary cabins for recreational use require a "miscellaneous permit", but I can't find any more information. Does anyone know anything about them? I tried to contact SRD, but they are useless when it comes giving out specific information.
