Houseboating Lake Koocanusa...any info appreciated

Heading to lake Koocanusa for a week and wondering what the regs are for this lake...my brother also tells me that there is sturgeon in here...true or not...went two years ago and caught 164 sucker looking fish but I am looking for some better fish this time around...any help appreciated

White jigs down deep for lakers. Or something red up high for the kokanee.

From what I hear the water is still extremely high right now. It will surely affect the fishing. Be patient and good luck.

Just got back from Koocanusa yesterday. I was fishing the Montana side but the kokanee fishing was excellent.

I'll be there in a week. And white spinny tail (3" meanie) brings to mind another question - is there any way to put a trailing hook on a jig? I like the 6" meenie, but I get a lot of short strikes and shredded tails.

dont bother with sturgeon. fish for bulls, kookaney's and rainbows. i think the montana side limit for kookaney salmon is 100, or 50 per day in the lake. fish a wedding ring or very small spinners for the salmon. remember, they are 6-10inch fish, so fish small hooks. they are near the surface or close too. if you find them you can jig on them or troll threw them and catch them in the 100's per day. Check out some of the small streams flowing into the lake and you will find brook trout and cutties. We caught over 100 brookies and redband trout in some of those creeks. Amazing that brookie limit is 20 or so i think per person per day.:126fs2277341:

we just returned, we fished across from kikomun provincial park, water was great, high but warm. We trolled on Ford Fenders with pink wedding rings, all we caught were small sunfish (green backs, slight rainbow sides, silver bellies, only about 6-8 inches long at about 20 feet deep, 50 feet off shore). we were also informed to use rubber snubbers as their mouths are fragile and the snubber helps stop tearing. Never caught any kokanee :sign0161: we fished surveyors for bass on frogs and had good success.

I find BC regs bit confusing to read, Kookanusa not listed specifically, and purchasing online license bit confusing.

That's right, BC is far from all single barbless.

Single Barbless is a general reg for moving waters in BC. This is not a bait restriction either.

Check your local and regional reg's.

Koocanusa falls under Region 4 general regs.

you can have more than one hook as long as they are single, barbless. I know we have discussed this before, but if you can show me anywhere in the regs that say you can only use one hook, I will eat my words. I was pulled over by the F&w and asked them to confirm this, and yes you can have more than one hook. It was always a pain to take the one hook off a lure with 2 on it, like a j plug.

We are thinking of doing the houseboat thing on Kookanusa as well in the next few yrs and it's great to hear the fishing is good. Can the guys who have been comment on the house boating part. I hear its way better then the shuswap for places to park, swiming(beaches) and camping over night. Plus not near as many houseboats. I have done the shuswap a few times and we want to try out this place next. Sorry for the de rail of sorts.

It's in the regs... Single = "one"!! From what I've been told treble is NOT considered a single hook. So in the case of a plug type lure, all the trebles have to be replaced with one single hook!! NOT 3 single hooks!

Not true, where does it say you can only use one hook? I don't see it anywhere. And right from the mouth of fish and wildlife and rcmp, it's perfectly ok to use more than one single barbless hook

I live 5 min from koocanusa. There are rainbows, cutthroats, bull trout, Kokanee, and northern pikeminnow aka(squawfish, chubb, etc.). Get a willow leaf, not too big, and a wedding ring. Put about 3-4 maggots on the hook and troll away. They are very easy to catch and really tasty. The limit is 15/day( I think). You may want to use a rubber snubber as they have really soft mouths. They average about 8-10". If you are catching the squawfish then speed it up a bit. Hope that helps.

I was a non believer as well years ago, the argument still continues with many I have spoken too regarding this.
