Hey everyone!

Made it to southern Ontario last Thursday and figured Id have time to give a "half way" trip report.

First off.. I caught my first bass! But I'll get there :)

So first stop from the airport was Peters Bait an Tackle store! From there we hit the Niagara River and began the fishing. First day we hooked into a bunch of bass (including my first! finally gotta lip a bass like they do on WFN lol). We fished for them until we started to see big muskie and carp cruising the banks! Immediately we pulled out anything big we had handy and started zooming them around the muskies.. some of the would follow the offerings but no takers. Pretty sweet seeing them on the first day out :)

Next morning we headed out again and started from the world known whirlpool and walked down river hitting all kinds of holes between boulders. A few more bass were caught but definately not as consitant as I had expected "bass" fishing to be lol. I was fishing with locals that have been fishing the area for the past few weeks and they had said they were getting them non-stop until today.. I had to tell them I carry a curse where when I show up the fish disappear :P

Next day we headed out on a buddys boat and fished the upper Niagara... not to far from the falls. Gotta admit I was pretty nervous looking off into the distance :P The weather here has been incredibly hot and humid and the water everywhere is a gorgeous blue. It's surreal just being on the water alone.

And as for yesturday, three of us hopped onto a pontoon and scooted over to a lighthouse on one of the brakewalls on Lake Erie and walked down the ledge tossing baits in throughout the rocks. Later that night we went to a different Port on Lake Ontario and I saw my first sheephead :)

And then this morning :) bass bass bass :) suns shining and catching fish all morning is a great way to start the day.

Tomorrow Im heading North of Toronto on a camping trip to check out more lakes. Until then.. here are some pics.

Well todays my last day in Ontario, my flight will be arriving bright an early tomorrow morning. Since my last set of pictures I have done many more things and seen many more fish and places.

We decided to head north to explore some of Ontarios many lakes and rivers.

On the way up we did a little thrill seeking at Canadas Wonderland and hit some of the biggest rollercoasters I have ever been on! Very first coaster of the day the carts stopped when I was going backwards up the conveyer belt. I had to sit strapped in at a 45 degree angle for about 15 minutes while the tech guys came and started screwing down bolts around the cart I was on.. gotta admit I was a little freaked out to continue the ride but being strapped in I didnt have much of a choice lol. Anyways, day at the Wonderland was awesome :)

Back to fishing now.. :)

After Canadas Wonderland we headed to Cottage Country and pulled over at a place called Santas Village.. (it was actually Santas Village lol) there was candycanes every where and little houses with christmas lights.. everything was decorated for a 365 day a year christmas! This was Santas Summer Sleigh that joined us on the Muskoka River.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P1040397.jpg

This river was another pretty one lined with gorgeous cottages all the way down. We paddled the canoe up river about 2km to the lake and drifted the float back down. A few pike, bass, small perch and sunfish were caught trolling cranks and worm harnesses through the winding river.

Sunfish
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P1040424.jpg

Next day went up to Huntsville and chatted with some local tackle stores for some info on a few lakes. We picked a few that were small with few cottages and headed out with a pontoon this time fishing deep. It was a little tough trying to find fish on the lakes.. trying to find depth and holes without a fishfinder.. but a few bass were randomly found.

And yesturday, hottest day of the trip, with humidity the temperature was estimated around 40 degrees.
We hiked the valley from the Niagara River...

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P1040465.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P1040469.jpg

and stopped at the whirlpool for some carp fishing... and hooollllyyy carp!

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P1040476.jpg

caught my First little carp!

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P10404802.jpg

after putting the carp back in the water I put more corn on my rig and wedged my rod back inbetween a few rocks. This is the crazy part...

Next thing I know I have 3 people yelling "Amber!! Your rod!!" I look over and my rod is getting dragged into the water. I chased after it and it took off right into the river. Next thing I know... Im in the river too racing and reaching as far as I could when I felt the butt of my rod. Up to my neck now I turned around and held on to the fish that was still on.

Pulled out a 12lb carp :)

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P1040487.jpg

After that we continued down the river banks hitting all the "good" spots :)

Apparently trips not over just yet. Whispered reports of salmon are being caught on one of the rivers. Currenty we are driving north of toronto and spending the night casting for chinook. Gunna be a long night and hopefully we can hook into some big fish!

The Nottawasaga River?
Some great fishing there in the late summer and early fall (and late winter / spring for steelhead too :))

Bit early for salmon in the rivers, but there may be some early 'scouts' cruising off the mouths of the rivers. If you'd get any they would be scrappy for sure, nothing like fresh 'silvers' on a spoon cast from shore :).

Note: I lived in Owen Sound for 8 years so am familiar with salmon fishing there. Man I miss that! And we sure miss the 10 days of the Salmon Spectacular derby held the end of August - through Labour Day weekend. Wife was saying just a couple of days ago that she wants to attend that event sometime again.

No it wasnt that river. Same direction though :) 3 of us got to one of the piers on Lake Ontario around midnight. There was probably already about 15-20 people divided between the two peirs all fishing underneath the lighthouses casting into the darkness of the lake.

It was absolutely spectacular out there! The moons light shimmered from the horizon of Lake Ontario right to the peir in a perfect triangle on the water. Huge rolling waves were crashing the peirs cement walls from the northwest and all you could hear other then the waves was everyones lines squealing from their reels then our glowing spoons splashing through the surface.

Half an hour in I saw the first salmon hooked from the next peir over so we knew the rumors were true! Not to long after Geoff hooked and landed one! For a small chinook salmon this fish sure put up a scrappy fight! It was awesome!

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/ambuler44/P1040536.jpg

Between 3-5am fishing really slowed down. Temperature dropped and the wind picked up. Between 5-6am the sun was coming up and fishing boats were cruising out from inbetween the peirs. So we had one last cast... and headed to the airport

and definately confirms that its a sucker but tough saying what kind. Another site I found says its hard distinguishing between a bunch of the suckers so its recommended not to bother keep anything (for food or bait) since a lot of the suckers are threatened.

These pics just came in the other day..

so I left out a part of the carp story..

after I charged into the water after my rod a hardcore carp fisherman came up to me while I was fighting the fish (laughing of course from my plunge into the river) and asked if he could take some pictures of my carp with his expensive underwater camera.

I said "sure" and played with the fish a little longer in the shallows trying to get it to face the camera man

Eventually I just wanted to land the fish lol but I exchanged emails with him and he gave me permission to share the photos. :)

Last picture looks like I might have been close to loosing the hook set on him :)
