The countdown has started!

I'm going for ice off at opening weekend. I'll be in zone NB1. This vote is based solely on what my wish is and not on reality.

Water will be wide open and the Pike will be in a cranky ass fighting mood. On a different note, my neighbors are starting to give me funny looks the last couple of weeks? It may because of me sitting in my boat in the garage going bbbrrrmmm bbbrrrmmm bbbrrrmmm and yelling SHE"S A GOOD FIGHTER BABY!!!

Took a quick trip to Newell tonight to see the progress and and I was supprised that it is ice free. There is still some ice floating around but will be gone shortly with the wind.

Is there good fishing from the shore on either of these lakes?

Ive seen people at travers have some good luck off the shore or off the dock. most people fishing off shore fish down from the little bow campground.

Hi Mikeelliot.
Go to the East end of Travers and throw a Smelt out anywhere the hills are rite up to the shore. These steep banks have produced some nice Pike for me over the years, I like to lay my Smelt on the bottom as big Pike are lazy and will go for the easy pickings. Plus I have caught a few nice Rainbows in Travers fishing this way.

I fished off the shore at Travers many times, used to be able to catch enough whitefish for supper in about an hour by the provincial park. Cast spoons or jigs and you'll catch pike and walleye. With this weather the pike are going to be very vulnerable opening week on the prairie reservoirs, last time we had a spring this late guys were catching 3-4 20lb pike a day out on the ridge reservoir, not very many being released. Hopefully it warms up pretty fast otherwise they'll be a bit of a slaughter in a few of the popular spots.
