I just got back from a fly fishing trip to Cuba with board member Mudkid. We had a great time and caught some nice fish. Here's a few pics:

It's called a UV Buff. It is just for sun protection because when you head out fishing you can't get out of the sun for 10+ hours and it is intense. I wore it pretty much all of the time but I tried to remember to pull it down for pictures. Bugs are not a problem during the day.

Great looking fish Chet, congrats on another productive trip. What weight rod were you using for the tarpon? How long was the fight with the bigger ones? Your bone looks like his tail ran into some trouble.

I used a 12 weight most of time for Tarpon. They really fight. One friend of mine broke a high end 11 weight rod clean off 3 inches above the grip when he was trying to stop a nice 60 lb Tarpon from going into a mangrove. The smaller ones jump a lot more than the big ones. The big Tarpon in the above pics took my friend about 40 minutes to land. The Bonefish in that picture must have been nipped by a Cuda or something because he was completely missing the bottom fork of his tail. The sea is definitely an unfriendly place for smaller fish.

Were you based out of Veradero? Can you give me a ballpark cost for the boat and guide? Did you hire the boat/guide privately or did you go through the travel agency? Looks like I really missed out on this one when I was in Cuba 12 years ago. BEL

Awesome pictures . Looks like you guys had a great time , I bet them Tarpon woulda been fun to fight on a fly rod , My buddy just got back From Boca and went fishing for tarpon there they were catching them on average 145 lbs and the biggest being 238lbs and in my books thats a mamoth of a fish. Great job.And that Cuda how do they compare to pike or musky ? I know salt water fish fight alot harder then fresh Im just curious to know the differeance.Next winter im sapost to be going to mexico or Florida to do some Salt water fishing Ither would be fun I think.

Those cheap Xi 2 Saggy rods just aren't made for real fish:lol:

Actually it was a Thomas and Thomas HII. It was kind of funny because he is a bit of an anti-Sage guy and I offered to lend him Xi-2. He wouldn't touch it.

One guy came down with only two rods and I was fishing with him on the second day. He was bragging about how he's never broken a rod on a Saltwater trip and that 2 rods is plenty. 3 hours later he was borrowing my T&T 8wt after snapping his while rigging up. You can bet I bugged him about that for a few days.

That Tarpon was a hell of a birthday present for you.... but I'm afraid it wasn't your 30th dude. Don't worry, you get around as well as any 40 year old I know!
