OK I hear the term "Boiler Room" an awful lot since joining this forum. I wasn't raised or taught this term as it relates to hunting so can someone explain to me exactly where the boiler room is on elk/deer/moose/etc.? Lungs/ribcage or heart/shoulders?

I feel almost embarassed asking!

I never heard the term either growing up, I just assumed it ment the kill zone. Not sure if it is heart vs lungs specific
As anatomy goes isn't it kinda hard/immpossible to hit only the heart and not lungs and heart on a nice broad side shot?

This is how I believe the expression began. During the war when targeting an enemy ship with a bomb from a plane or a torpedo from below or from guns on another ship, The boiler room of the ship was the best target. The boiler room or the engine room later on. If the engine is taken out the ship cannot move and then is out of action.

The heart and lungs of an animal are like its boiler room or engine room. They supply what the animal needs to move, oxygenated blood to the brain and muscles.
ON A BROAD SIDE SHOT
A bullet in the heart or big blood pipes close to it will stop blood flow.

A shot in the lungs will stop oxygen transfer and cause lots of bleeding.

A shot a little far back will hit the big liver and cause a lot of bleeding.

A shot a little high will hit spine and cause shock and paralysis.

If the animal is not broad side a bullet can be put in the "boiler room" from different angles just as well (with the right bullet/cartridge)

A couple times on here I have read someone say "I put a shot right in the boiler maker" LOL! Got their mords wixed up.

duffy is actually completely correct on this one.... even to the point of the term boilermaker. you shouldnt shoot a cocktail, nor a guy who builds and operates boilers. just dont ask him for a regulations explanation.:sHa_shakeshout:

The boiler room holds all the pumps and heat exchanging systems.

Therefore inthe hunting world, that would equate to the heart and lung region, also containing some of the animals major blood vessels.

Heh! And here I thought that the "Engine Room" was was the heart/lung area, and the "Boiler Room" was where things boiled/fermented and built up pressure (e.g. "gas" pressure), therefore meaning the guts...

Awesome pictures guys haha. Maybe the admins should make a sticky of "Common Terminology" and attach those to the entry for "Boiler Room".

Here's my boiler room. The photos a bit old and there's more to it now, but if someone were to shoot it in the stainless steel cabinet or the main circulation pump at the bottom right of the boiler, I'd be without primary heat, but I'd also be returning fire

Who's being subliminal? I'm being downright obvious :D

That plus I don't want that pic to become 'stolen' and used for any other purposes.
