Got this from a co-worker of mine. Her Dad was a fishing nut like us and she knew I was too. When he died, she gave me all of his fishing stuff which was very nice of her and very humbling. I was honoured that she felt me worthy to have her Dad's stuff.

Among the pile was this old rod. I am not familiar with it or what it is for, but I would guess it would work great for hauling up a big-azz laker off of a downrigger.

Anyway....it is a very short rod. Just under 6 feet, but very stout. The end has a 'wheel' on the tip which I though was odd. It had a large old baitcaster on it (which I am going to use for ice fishing).

I just have no use for it...

So if someone can tell me what it is for, I would appreciate it...and then you can have it.

Use to use thoes rods, with penn reels, and steel line, when trolling deep for lake trout in Saskatchewan.

I knew a guy who used a rod like that for Walleye. He used it at night with 30 pound test, trolling 7 inch Floating Rapalas. With a stiff rod like that, he could "rip" that Rapala through the water constantly. The proof was in the pudding. He would catch his limit of nothing less than four pounds in half the time it took us with ugly sticks and 8 pound test.

Wholesale or basspro, just in the salt water section (I bought one from wholesale once when i visited some family). I used Rods like that for bottom fishing in BC.

I actually have one of those with a big reel, bought it at a store closeout in Calgary way back. could probably use it for a winch in a pinch :bad_boys_20:

Definitely designed as a deep sea jigging rod for halibut. Coupled with a big winch, heavy mono, the wheel is designed to prevent the line from cutting into or binding up (years before the technology of abrasion resistant guides).

As mentioned, you can use this for other applications, but becuase of the stoutness, it's definitely not a great down rigger or dipsy rod as these trolling rods need to be long a flexible to ensure a hook up (when they spring back) on a take off the release.

I guess, this rod can be used to cast for perch, but the primary design is deep jigging with heavy baits, heavy line.

Im really liking Penn reels just bought a big saltwater one to go on my spinning tiger, and have a smaller one on my steelhead/sturgeon rod. Foergot about this setup til the post, thanks for the reminder. I could always replace the tip but I think this setup will be a great boat rod for sturgeon, rod isnt marked with an action but Id say medium/heavy

Geez, Wayne....

That looks almost exactly like what I have except the reel is red. Hmmmm...maybe I should keep it and got fishing for sturgeon with you next year?

Use to use thoes rods, with penn reels, and steel line, when trolling deep for lake trout in Saskatchewan.

×2 this is the most common use for that type of rod, they were also used for getting deep with big lead 1,2,3 lbs with a flasher and herring on the coast.

only downside with a reel that size, if you spool with braid its going to cost you 60 plus bucks for a 600 yard spool. worth it though, think I will pick up a spool of 80 pound for it over the winter.

on my heavy out fit I fill the spool with a good mono then spool the last 100yrds with my braid. I make sure to use a mono 10 lb heavier than the braid. one mans thoughts.
