Was planning on hitting the NSR this afternoon, but there was quite a bit of ice floating down, so I ripped home, swapped out my river gear for some light ice fishing rods and headed out with another member to do a little scouting.

It was rather late in the day, but we still managed to pull of a somewhat productive afternoon. :)

Always have a plan 'B'! :sHa_shakeshout:

All the little buggers went back for next time, when I show up with a stove and a frying pan! http://www.madcastgaming.com/forum/images/smilies/smilies3/yumyum.gif

Not quite on par with huntin'fool's brookies, but something > nothing :)

Is that your regular hole or somewhere new? Didn't realize there were brookies in there with that much colouration if it is where I am thinking.

~2" :o

At least where we were...the lake has some springs in it, and there were still spots that were open and a lot of thinner ice along the reeds etc.

Smart people should probably wait...especially with the warm weather in the forecast. I just checked it and freakin' 10 degrees by Saturday?!

Very true, we could be looking at a flood ice situation real quick out there. Maybe the warm weather will be a good thing...melt off all the snow and call it a Mulligan?

I hear ya Wayne...fortunately I was only over about 3' of water, so though it would have really sucked if I'd have gone through, I'd have made it out.

That being said I couldn't imagine water that cold hitting my 'critical area' :scared0018:

Go check out the new tobagans at crappy tire, not only can they carry your equipment but would keep you afloat due their weight distribution and the fact that they are super light foamcore pn a super slidy film.

And cheap!!!

And remember, it may be shallow when you go through but might also be thin mud when you hit ground,,, nothing worse than mud in summer, add being waist deep in an icy chill.

Just be careful, please.

For sure man, and I appreciate the concern. This is another reason I didn't head out alone!

Definitely nice to get out on the ice. Although I think next time we bring some rope just in case.....

That trout I kept still had a muddy taste to it, might need a few more days of the cold before a pan fry on the ice is in order.

Over all still a great day!

Im jelous.... I might have to stop and try to get a couple brookies on the ice while on the way back from one last attempt at Wabamun. Trolling for pike and ice fishing trout in the same day would be awsome.

Careful if you do...this snow could cause some flooding problems...

Calculated risk.

There is still the risk of hypo thermia. I assume your vehile is just mere feet away and not 1/4 mile off. Also could cause clots to form. So just saying that its only 3 feet deep doent mean your safe. Besides. How much is one more fish worth.

I assume u use the buddy system. Otherwise...

Wish i could have made it yesterday bud! Well have to see how the weather holds up for the week and maybe bring out the ol frying pan! Went out Saturday night on the river and got 3 Walleye and a suprise Goldeye before i packed up. If the river ice doesnt let up that might be it for the season.

good for you geezle. you said on an earlier post that you'd be one of the first. you even beat your own estimate. i'm guessing chic. or sauer due to the brookies. nice fish esp. that larger one.
funny that every once in awhile i will see a thread that was there say 18 hours ago but i was on 12 hours ago and it wasn't posted. it's happened a few times now.
