Hey I was just wondering about the whitefish spawn today when I was driving past all the sloughs and lakes that have been frozen for the past week or so. In past years earliest ice was about the best for fishing for whitefish it seems to me. Is the spawn triggered by first ice or is it at a certain time of year? Just wondering as ice seems to be forming much earlier this year from previous years, it seems to me I am usually ice fishing on thin ice in early december for the whites but this cold snap is getting me thinking...

Lake whites spawn once the water temps get below 6C.

I tried to check at McGregor last Saturday where I watched hundreds of them last year (~3 weeks later though) - didn't see any, none :(. Too early?
But I had only one hour before the sunset and checked only one spot.

Ah so I will likely miss the whitefish spawn due to hunting season this year, that kinda sucks...
