Got drawn for Mule deer this year....wasn't sure if I would have a chance to get out but took a day and a half on Nov 1-2, 2012 to get out with my two hunting partners.
It is very refreshing to get out and spend some time outdoors and enjoy some of natures finest experiences. Opening day was windy and had a freezing wet mist coming down which limited visibility significantly especially when trying to look into the river canyons. Late in the day the wind shifted to a NW from a SE and the mist stopped and the river bottoms came alive. What a sight to see upwards to 150 mule deer that day. Herds of does of up to 16 animals and bucks starting to test the does receptiveness. It is great to hunker down in the breaks and watch larger bucks chase smaller insubordinate bucks and then herd the does. With the exception of two bucks in the 120-130 range, we ran out of day light to make a play on any of the larger bucks.
November 2, 2012, the wind was calmer and no mist was falling although there still was significant fog around making hunting more challenging. Shortly after legal light a small herd of does came across the upper flats with a large bodied buck running hard behind them heading for the safety of the river bottoms. At 300 yards they stopped and milled around for a brief moment before the does continued on their quest. Just as the buck was turning to follow, I was able to connect on him.
He is not the largest deer but the memories of spending the day and a half with my hunting partners and the beauty of the animal was worth everything to me. This great mulie will be a fine addition to my show room down the road.
This morning one of my hunting partners tagged out on his mulie. His words to me was that he was shaking like a leave and his heart felt like it was pounding out of his chest. If that isn't the essence of the hunt, I'm not sure what is.
Enjoy....and if I am lucky, I'll be able to post a part 2 to this adventure if we get out for some whitetails.
