Hello gents, So I'm looking at picking up a new general purpose hunting knife, gutting, skinning etc.

I've tried a few diff brands CRKT, Buck, Rapala, Kershaw and Gerber. I have to say they were all okay, but none of them were anything to write home about.

What are you using this year to process your game?

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for a high quality, high grade knife?

Check out Cutco knives.

Amazingly good for the price. The bright orange handle is invaluable when you drop something at last light. Service is second to none.

Ergo Pro Hunter. The only Buck I've found with really top-notch steel. That baby is built for gutting and skinning. ;)

I am using a pair of Gerber Gators, one with an ATS-34 blade, and one with a 154CM blade. They are reasonably priced, and they hold an edge very well.

Outdoor Edge swing blade

I used one for the first time last Thursday. It seemed to gut well, but we only had one deer to do, so I really couldn't judge how well it held an edge.

I second the cutco. Last year I gutted and skinned 4 deer, a bear, a cougar, and an elk, and it was still very sharp. I sent it away after the season for sharpening and now it's razor sharp again. The Havlon knives are also beautiful for caping hides.

I actually have a Puma skinner sitting at home, It was handed down from my grandfather. It cleaned my first few deer and has gone into retirement.(until I have kids) It is a great knife! I may have to go take a peek at some of the others in their line.

I have the same Buck Ergo Prohunter that Oko posted; I bought it because it's profile to me quite resembled that of the Puma White Hunter, which is what a hunting buddy of mine who is also a journeyman butcher uses. The Buck has a very grippy handle, but I think the blade would pair quite nicely with a more traditional staghorn handle

I also got the Ergohunter Pro folder. It comes with a belt sheath, which is pretty much the only carry option for it, as the rubbery handle texture makes it pretty much impossible to either slide into or remove from your pocket. That and its a bit large & fat for pocket carry.

I have a Dozier skinner, Fallkniven F1, and a Cutco drop point with Double-D edge. I usually reach for the Cutco, although the Dozier is a real gem, and well worth the coin.

I've dressed and skinned 7 deer and a moose with the Cutco, and I'll do a couple more deer this season and then send it in for sharpening. It's still very sharp, but not as sharp as it was when new.

RJ Handcrafted Knives out of Billings, Montana, built from D-2 steel with a bighorn sheep handle. Blade takes a while to sharpen, but holds an edge like nothing other. Check him out on google.

Something basic but very functional? http://www.crazycrow.com/green-river-knives .. I have several of these that I unroll when a moose or elk hast to be tended to.

Something cool that you can wear on you belt while hunting? I have one of these in stag. Joker makes great quality knives: http://www.aceros-de-hispania.com/joker-knife/joker-knife-cc16.asp?product=joker-cc16

Want something exotic but a little more local? Try these guys: http://www.worldknives.com/ .. Very reasonable prices and shipping. not a super selection but close by.

I have almost as much fun buying knives as I do guns! :sHa_shakeshout:

Then again, all I tend to carry when deer hunting is a good quality trapper like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PUMA-Tec-Black-Sandalwood-2-Blade-Grand-Trapper-Folding-Hunting-Pocket-Knife-/360506853869?pt=Collectible_Knives&hash=item53efe209ed

If your goal is edge holding, buy a Dozier.

I just picked up one of these and they are really nice and well made...as close as you can get to a custom knife without it being one I am told by other knife makers...

I am just waiting for it to come back from getting a custom leather belt case made for it... :)

X2 I love mine, used for everything, holds an edge, and sharpens up very well.

But thinking of adding the swingblade to my collection.

The best is the Cold Steel knife called Hunter. It has a nice soft long rubber handle and sharp and easy to sharp also. check it out.

tough enough to do anything you need, holds an edge pretty decent without being too hard to sharpen, and best of all is that soft grippy handle that stays grippy even covered in goo. under 50 bucks at walmart and ct means i dont cry when i lose it, which has happened.

Definitely double D, holds an edge like crazy. The first year I had mine I skinned a moose and about 5 deer, and it was still sharp. Send it away after the season and they usually just ship me out a new, sharp one! Hard to beat it...even though I still have about 9 million knives that I bring along with me every time. My theory is that you can never have enough guns, knives or flashlights!
