Headed down to a nearby river yesterday... managed a few small bulls before a big red beast came up out of the hole after my spoon. Quickly released as it appeared to have "unfinished business" to be done in the very near future.

Decided to try my luck at shore fishing the lake today.... Weather was bad but i still stayed till dark and managed to get my limit on kokanee. The most greedy lil Kokanee ive come across.. most were caught on a small mepps spinner but i got 2 that took the monster 5 o diamonds and were keepers due to face mangling. Landed(released) 4 bulls ela 5 o diamonds and raw chicken. Had a beast right on shore but he bolted while i was trying to hold the line, hang on to the rocks and take a pic... snap and gone :(

All and all some good fishing right now. Put out a set line in hopes of a tasty burb waiting for me in the morning. Gotta love this side of the divide!

Only the one pic of the small fish that ate the big 5 o diamonds is a Kokanee... The rest are bull trout and a coho. The kokanee here are small but Plentiful and rarely go over a pound.

I agree, thought that one was a rainbow - small yellow fin. I would be surprised as all hell to see a kokanee that size with parr marks....not to mention the heavy spotting on top.

Could very well be a baby rainbow. The lake is stocked with the gerrard rainbows that rarely reach the monster size of the ones further down the watershed. Would explain why those couple were so fiesty! Im going to have to start paying closer attention thanks

Went back this morning to check my set line.... bait gone :(
Caught a couple of small ones but found only one worthy lil keeper
Went home early for dinner and a nap....
Woke up with the thought of fresh fish n chips for supper tomorrow and decided to drag my sorry butt back down to the lake. Was a lil windy, clear n cold.. I threw on some hotfoot stickies and my HH suit, grabbed my lawn chair my rifle and rod and stumbled down the frozen rocks to the half floating dock. Set up shop on the end and cast out.. waiting... Look up at the stars... clear as a bell... what a view! around 830pm nibble..a bite...Set the hook... a fighter... not looking good for a burbot... Another bull trout.. medium size(released after a quick pic). Cast out, more bites... too busy looking at the light show of stars and not paying attention to my line and i missed a few good hits. Decide to use a glow stick hooked on the line sitting in the top of a clear glass bottle trick... perfect, now i can have my rod sitting on the deck and look up at the sky.. a half hour goes by... every couple of min something is just tapping my line hard enough to make the glow stick rattle in the bottle neck but not knock it over...All of a sudden the bottle goes flipping down the deck with glowstick.. i jump up set the hook and it feels big but isnt fighting just pulling down... must be what ive come for... what came up from the depths blew my mind... the burbs there get long but are usually skinny... not this one...a real beast as far as mountain burbs go! Caught another bull shortly after but never brought it up on the dock for a pic... was not that impressive but im sure gonna be eating some healthy portions of fish n chips

The burb was 6+ inches across the top of the head and 39 inches long :)
Ill tell u how it tastes tomorrow!

P.S You know you have been doing a lot of fishing when your down to wearing your steel toe work boots cause they are the only dry footwear u have left.

Did you post any pictures of the Kokanee... because not of these fish posted are Kokanee! So I hope the rainbow trout limit is the same as the kokanee if that's the case cause you are likely thinking young rainbows are kokanee.

Couldn't tell ya, my hands were so cold by the time cleaning happened that I took the 2 monster back straps and 2 poorly cut fillets off the tail... Never opened the body cavity. That is unless there is another way to tell? Wonder what's with the bright yellow spots are about too.....

Awesome catch and story. Thanks for posting. I've always thought about fishing that area of BC sometime. Your story and pictures are really tempting me to make a drive over there.

nice catches, might wanna replace the trebles with a single siwash hook for easier releases when you want to release, better hooksets with the single too

Yea I've been using single barbless in the river and I agree that the single round hook lands just as many as the treble in the lake. Although the river seems to be more action packed for the most part. The trebles usually get mangled quickly as the hooks seem light and cheap on the spoons... Bull trout r hard on hooks but seem very resilient to release as long as u tighten up the drag and horse them in instead of playing them half to death first.
