What is better to hunt a wolf with? A big caliber or will a .22 work? Want to do as little damage to hide as possible.

I take it you own a moose gun and a .22? ..... imo best wolfers are 22.250, .223, .243. If you only have a .22 rimfire, go with your big rifle.

Just my opinion... But I'm thinkin' you're going to want a slightly larger calibre than .22 :thinking-006:

22-250 243 maybe 25-05 or 257. 204 ruger maybe.

I have a 22-250 and the 243, I use my 243 majority of the time.

A buddy took a nice wolf on the last afternoon of hunting last year for big game....he was hunting with his 300WM..The wolf come out chasing the whitetails out of the trees, he put a 180gr Accubond into the wolf!!

Ah, the perennial argument . Easier to sew up a pelt than track a wounded wolf. :D

If you have to shoot a wolf, please do not shoot it with a .22. A .22 can bearly knock down a gopher let along a 100lbs animal with thick fur at a range > 50 yards.

I know lots kill coyotes with a .22 and I don't have a problem with that, but a wolf is just to big for a .22 imo. You can always buy a cheap .223 or even an SKS if money is an issue.

A .22 will kill a 200 pound man. No idea why guys are saying it wont kill a wolf. Not my first option, but it will do the trick

Personally I'd use my .243, but can't imagine my .22 mag not doing a reasonable job with some good jacketed hollowpoints in it.

a .22 can kill an elephant if your are absolutly perfect and lucky. doesn't mean u should use it. same goes for a .22 on a wolf. not a good idea. don't try the .22. find a cheap 223 and go to town. no one wants to see wounded ****ed of predators running around.

It's all about your confidence in your shooting. All I ever use for killing 1000lb beef is a .22. It's all about shot placement and distance to target.
Personally I would use .204, 22-250 or .243 for wolf.

A dog is one tough animal to kill,, very tough. Pound for pound probably the toughest animal there is. Yes it will kill them with a perfectly placed head shot. If hit some place else it most likely would die eventually but not for quite some time and I doubt you would recover it. Use a higher powered cartridge like some of the others mentioned.

Personally I would use centrefire or larger, I smoked a pretty good sized grey on the trunk road the other night with my Tundra, that worked.

Wolves are a pretty darn tough critter. I use a 25-06 for wolves and have never had one run away on me.

A .22 for wolf is only good if he would be stuck in a trap. They can be super tough. I shot one with the .300 Wtby at 50 yards through the lungs with 180 grain Nosler partitions. It ran about 300 yards across a frozen river before piling up. If the shot doesn't incapacitate them they can cover alot of ground in a short time even if the shot is fatal.

Disagree, the 22 caliber is fine. just make sure you have enough powder behind it. Such as a 223 rem cartridge, 22-250 etc.
