After a 10 year lay-off from hunting (damn schooling and other life things), I got myself geared up over the last 10 months, plus licensing, the whole sha-bang, and finally got out there.

I hunted for the first 20 years of my life, all on the east coast, and mainly for ducks/pheasants/rabbits etc, with a smattering of deer hunting as a lad, but never had much success.

This year I got the antlerless WT draw in 406. Scouted throughout spring and summer trying to find somewhere to actually plant my butt. Got skunked last week, went out real early this morning and braved the cold. First 5 hours I only saw a large bull moose cross the cutline I was set up on, which was cool, but didn't help me. Finally took a walk to warm up, made my way down to a clear cut area around noon, and lo and behold, 3 whitetails! Dispatched the one at the back of the pack, 50 yard shot quartering away and on the move, through the ribs and bullet exited through the left shoulder. Ran about 30 yards and dropped dead. Turns out she was a he, and had a twig and berries! Tenderloin in the pan tonight.

Good first Alberta hunt for me, and great learning experience as I've never had the pleasure of field dressing and processing a deer before. A lot of prep definitely goes a long way.

Excellent for you. Just wanted to mention, especially since you said you were from down east. In Alberta you must leave evidence of sex or species on the animal until delivered to a butcher. I don't think this applies if your processing the animal yourself. Not knocking you so please don't take it that way. I know in NB we could remove all that but we had deer stations we had to bring our deer to and get a second verification tag, than you could remove everything except tags. Nice eats though

Nice.. I reload my own bullets. 270 WSM i use the barnes tsx 130g and they usually do damage similar to that.. I havent had anything take a step after being shot with one.. I was having some problems with numerous other bullets.. But those TSX are deadly.

If you are using the head and tail as evidence of sex and species...they must remain ATTACHED to the carcass. Just want to make that is clear for anyone else who reads this thread.

I don't think it was a beef at all....it was just being pointed out so that others who may be new to the sport can learn from it.....and do things 100% within the rules.

To the OP you will have some nice table fare this winter!

Thanks for sharing the info folks. I was aware of the regulations, but good for everyone to see the info.

And yes, very tasty. Bacon wrapped tenderloin tonight, forgot how good that stuff can be!
