What method would work best for targeting Lakers at the end of June?

I have a boat, plan on trolling but will not have acces to downriggers.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Plan on hitting Swan Lake by Caroline (unless there are better suggestions).

In june we have have the best success back in MAnitoba trolling the diving rapalas. The ones that are about 6-8 inches long with the bigger lip on it. Cant remember the name but they used to be $9.00 or so.
We let out WAAY more line than you would think would do it (watch not to tangle the hooks around the line when letting it out). We troll quite fast, enough to make the rod tough to hold after a while. We find that they run about 12 - 15 feet down for us. We fish this way over 20-50 feet of water.
The single biggest factor to me is color. Buy two of each or a few different colors. HAve each person try something different until you see a preference.
good luck.

Some info you may be able to use on here.. has a lot to do with downriggers but some of the same techniques can be applied.

This is a proven Manitoba method ...

If you dont want to buy a lot of xtra specialised gear .

any reel 12 or 14 lb. test mono ..

3 way swivel or bottom bouncer even

12" drop line 8 lb test with pencil weight on three way( buy at WSS ) or( we would make

weights out of heavy wire or welding rods , pound end flat

drill hole and attach snap swivel ) attach line to reel on

top loop on 3 way and 4 to 5 foot leader on middle loop on 3 way

I like flutter spoons ,or hammered silver walleye spinner with minnow or

# 5 CD Rapala .

Trick is to let rig down to bottom in idle , in about 30 to 50 ft. then

start to troll slowly , lakers feed up ..stop every once and a while and let rig sink ... You miss a few fish because of stretch in mono , and with no stretch you miss a few cause you pull it out when playing the fish ...

Caught a 20 lb plus in Reid Lake Man. on # 5 rapala , he chewed all the wood off while I played him . Good thing those trebles are connected ...

There is a web site that has good diagrams on 3 way swivel set ups .

jigging a couple feet off the bottom can be quite effective

Swan Lake isn't your typical lake trout lake, the deepest part is just over 40'. The numbers aren't very high, so it's a matter of putting in the time and some clicks. The 3 way swivel method will work as well as simply putting a heavy inline sinker a few feet infront of your lure. If your going slow enough that should get you deep enough. Keep in mind that those trout aren't like others that are found in deeper lakes and won't always be deep. Kwikfish and Flatfish are proven at that lake and I've had a bit of success on little silver williams wablers. Good Luck, those trout aren't big on average but they fight like they are.
