Soak some paper towel in regular peroxide (3%)then leave it for 12-16hrs. Worked great for mine.

Mix the peroxide with baking soda to make a paste and then paint it on. That's what I do and it works great. :)

Buy some magnesium carbonate from a taxidermy supply store. (AAA in Calgary)
Make a paste with the peroxide. Brush it on. Let it sit somewhere warm for a few hours. wash it off. Done.

So will the hydrogen peroxide 29% work?

Yeah the peroxide will work, just cover the skull with paper towel then soak it with the peroxide. I tried making a paste and brushing it on but found the paper towel method was easier/better.

End result:

How much product did you use a liter?

Once you've boiled it out and cleaned off all the flesh, let it dry completely for a day or two. I then hang the skull by the antlers off of one of the gambrels in the garage and spraypaint it with flat white spray paint, 2 coats. Then mix some Weldbond glue with water so it is'nt so thick and brush it on. Pay particluar attention to the teeth. The glue will seal the skull completely and lock the teeth in place to prevent them from falling out. White as the driven snow when finished.

I've heard to soak the skull in bleach. Is this not true?

bleach can soften the bone and the connective tissue between the individual bones, use the mag/peroxide solution. It works great

If you get some climber's chalk or gymnast's chalk, that's the stuff you want to mix with the peroxide to make your paste.

40 volume Hydrogen peroxide is what you want. Yes, that's 40 volume not %. It has something to do with how much volume of oxygen it combines with or something.

I never even used up a small, I'm guessing 500-750mm bottle

one of the keys is degreasing after cleaning, before whitening. Some above may look ok now, but in a couple months the grease will come through and will darken.

The 3% peroxide won't work long term, gotta be the 40%.

Get your wife to pick up pick up the powder bleacher and developer at the hair salon just get the best stuff they have. mix them then paint it on just put it in a garbage bag and two days later all done. Then the glue with water will give it the glossy finish. total cost 10 fifteen bucks. Pretty sure most taxidermists use this. Good luck.

I used the metod to me of whitening a skull and most of it has already been given . One stepped I left out was to place the skull in a plastic bag with some hi test / camp fuel gas overnight to complete the deal . Never used it but he said the bear skull would have even been brighte r. Anyone else do this ?
