The first few days of the season at Gull I found that very close to shore works great. 3 ft. of water, one hole. Limited out on whites in 45 minutes. Next person used the hole, they limited out in 1 hr. then the last person also limited out in an hour. NE side of lake.
If the 'bite' is slow in deeper water , you might want to try in closer to shore.

I don't disagree with you at all Red. Today, I found the opposite to be true. I moved from sandy bottom to weeds at 10 feet and got 3 in 30 min. Shrimp were in the weeds. I have moved from deep to shallow also. I also agree with you that early in the season they are more shallow than deep. My experience anyways. BEL

Checked with the boys fishing at Brownlows Landing @ sw corner of Gull . The ice goes from 10 to 12 inches . Entrance to lake looks sketchy but they where out with wood huts & trucks .
