Hey Med Hat folks,

I am heading down there for christmas and my Dad and I go ice fishing every boxing day. Newell is too far for my Dad and we went to Yellow last year. How is the ice and what lake is best to go...Rattlesnake, Cavin, Murray, yellow Etc...

Thanks Guys

I was at yellow lake a couple weeks ago and the fishing was slow. Caught 4 between 2 of us and they were all small. There was still some open water by the culvert along the dam. I hear rattlesnake and murray are both slow as well.

We used to just hit the pond right in town for killing off the day with family. Nothing huge but always pulled out some perch. But that was a few years ago.

They drained the pond to put a new gate in this summer.:angry3: Pike has
been slow for the close lakes. Heard Cavan wasn't to bad Coupla 16" trout is better than turkey leftovers.:sHa_shakeshout:

What's the name of this place? I have forgotten... But we used to clean up on the perch every time we went out. Just dove down the canal to gain access. Am I going to get hate mail for posting a perch spot. :scared0018:

As i have been gone from the HAT area for along time, is this a secret honey hole for the residents of the area or not much interest fishing there?

I hear you might head out to newell on Sunday....You were also talking about clear and PCR....Let me know...I have been out to newell 2 days in the past couple of weeks with Wayne, ogre and a few others and am not sure if I want to do the drive again..But would rather go where the majority goes...:sHa_shakeshout:

Cavan is a good bet if you are looking for rainbows and its nice and close to town. Use ultra-light tackle and bring a shrimp ring for bait, that way if the fish don't bite you can have a nice snack on the ice :)

Klaudts is ok.
Usually lots of perch....just no size.
That being said one of the biggest perch I have caught was out of there.....but it was the only one over 7"

Michelle res is another good spot. I was there last week and the fishing was excellent. Lots of ice there as well, almost a foot in most places. I found that just a snell hook and some orange gulp pasty bait worked the best though i caught fish out there on jigs as well. Lots of trout in that lake and some bigger (16-20") ones as well. good luck on boxing day!

All four of us limited out in 4 hours. we tried everything but the kitchen sink, Until we put worms on we never got a bite. once we put worms on it didn't seem to matter what colour or shape the hook was, we caught. Not only did we catch fish but we must have saw over a hundred fish with the camera. A great day of fishing!!
