Just looking for some opinions on the savage 7mm youth model. My son (14) is looking to buy one and was wondering what everyone thought.

7mm what? (7-08 most likely)
Savage model what?(11, Axis?)

My boy has an Axis youth in 7mm-08Rem, shoots great, fits his 5'3" frame well, some trigger tweaking is almost a must, 20" bbl, should be a 22".

Bought the wife a Savage model 14 American classic stainless walnut in .243. She handles it pretty good and she's 5'4" 120 lbs. I assume you meant 7mm-08 in youth, If so that should be a great caliber for a 14 year old. Savages are tack drivers straight out the box.

Sorry should have been more specific. Yes the 7mm-08 in the youth. Thanks for the tips. He has been shopping online and this is the one he has his wallet set on. Glad to know he was not looking at a real dud.

Might want to look into an after market trigger (rifle basix) as I'm sure many others will suggest, savage guns have heavy triggers out of box, the cheap ones at least.

Should be a good gun to start on, keep an eye open for the savage 111 as they are a step up from the axis, I lucked out and found one cheaper than the axis at the time. I Chose it because of overall quality.

I bought a model 11 in a 243 for my son. Trigger pull was off the scale but the gunsmith got it down to 3.5 lbs. Shoots great and is a keeper. I put a slip on pad and use it for coyotes. The scope that came with it lives in the box that the scope I bought to replace it with came in. Overall it is a great gun. Somthing an after markert stock would be worth getting once your son outgrows the factory stock.

Finace's 13 year old brother tried her Axis 7-08 youth model and whacked his first deer at 200 yrds with it. Loved it so much his dad bought him one for Christmas. Great first gun and even better caliber, very effective on most big game with very light recoil

That is great to hear. Glad that it is a great gun. Young blood is going to pick his up at the end of the month.

An axis in 7-08 will be just fine. You can't deny its an accurate rifle if maybe a little... lets say frugal in its construction. And that's a good round. If he gets accustomed to shooting with that heavy trigger he'll be that much better with his next rifle. Though there may never be a need. That's a decent all-around cartridge for someone with good aim and patience.

I bought my 14 yr old a ruger no. 1a.

Very good fit for small 5' and 120lbs shooter. Like that its a single shot so he learns that one shot is all you need.

This ruger 1a is only 7.25 lbs, chambered in 7x57 (7mm Mauser).

Its similar to 7mm.08 but you can buy factory ammo with bullets up to 175grain.

He likes it because for him its got that "cool factor". A calibre developed by Mauser in the late 1800's and still preferred by some hunters to this day. Jack O'Conner wrote alot about this calibre because that what his wife used as her hunting rifle. Karamjo Bell, a famous Elephant hunter/poached use this calibre to brain shoot tuskers.

If I didn't find this 7x57, I would have bought the 7mm.08 for him.

i cant speak on the make of rifle but i can somewhat on the 7mm-08. I bought my fiance a 7mm-08 this fall and its a great caliber! packs a punch and light recoil! She actually shot her first deer ever at 242 yards this fall and it put a hell of a hurting on that buck! really impressed with the caliber so far!

Bought my 13 year old a Tikka T3 blued composite in 243. He loves it cause it's only 63/8 lbs. A friend of mine bought his 12 year old the same gun in a 7-08. Kind of wish I had done the same. Heavier bullets and not much more recoil

Glad to hear that the recoil is low. I have never owned a 7mm so that is good to know. Thanks everybody

7 mm might not be the best name for it. Could get you into trouble purchasing ammo with all the " pro's" at gun shops these days. There is a 280 rem, 7mm RM, 7 mm RUM, 7mm express and your 7-08. All i'm saying s make sure you know exactly what you need when you go into some gun shops. The 7-08 is def the lowest recoil of the few I listed Cuase a 7 RUM will rip your arm off for 155 fps faster!

I have a savage youth 7mm-08 and I've never had a problem with it. The only thing I don't like is the force it takes for the pull on the trigger, its been a very accurate gun so far and yes it was my first rifle too! I had to put a limbsaver pad on it ( I'm a wuss lol)

Take a look at the Marlin X series in youth 243 and 308. The quality is superior to the savage, and cost is less. Only the 2 calibers available in youth config though. Check out the reviews on them on Wholesale Sports site or online Also Boyds Gunstocks makes wood stocks in numerous configurations for the Marlin X series for around !00$ so can dress up or lenghten when needed.
