Went out after work yesterday. Had a good outing. Caught a pike first cast. With in 10 minutes a friend pulled a sucker (long nose i think). Few more wee pike and the sun started to get low. Thats when the wallys come thru. Caught my first open water wally of the year followed by a nice goldeye another walleye and then a decent walleye.

Had to try the close to the camera thing too but the fish curled its tail.

And the sucker

Oh and we went down a road that had a snake on it.

I've got to ask, when you say NSR I am assuming you mean the North Sask. River!!! If this is true, where abouts were yu that the river is that narrow??? Thirdly, how long do you think that snake was, because it looks pretty long, too long for even a big Garter Snake, I am no expert on snakes in fact I have a big fear of them, what kind of snake do you think it is if it is not a garter snake??? Finally, nice pictures, thanks for sharing.

good stuff, thx for sharing the pics. My best guesses are your at Whitemud creek mouth, or the Sturgeon river mouth downstream of Fort Saskatchewan.. Lots of those suckers coming out more and more these days.

I'm fairly certain that the snake was a garter snake just because I believe they are the only species indigenous to Alberta, especially this far north. Also we found one larger last year, like toonie thickness and well over 2 feet. Very tame nature to these snakes so I’m guessing they are harmless. (We have handled them)

Kudos to u boys for taking note. It was a creek that fed into the river. The water clarity in the creek was unreal compared to the river. At the mouth you could draw a line between water u could see into and water that was a turbidity of like 10. This is where I got the nice Wally, at the transition between turbidity that is.

I don't know the name of the creek ;) nor can I disclose the name of the of the creek but I think there all the same currently (a lot less turbid). Give your local tribs a try!!! :D When I was there 4 or 5 days before this particular trip the level was literally a meter higher even more probably.

Oh, and the sucker was released. I for one don't mind catching them and I know my bud was pleased cause it broke his skunk. I've never caught one of this particular species (long nose?) and hope to catch one someday. I saw the one that lethal posted and i do think they are the same species but this fish unfortunatly didn't have the great colourations. I'm hope'n that one day this attitude towards suckers and actually trying to catch them will lead to my first ever sturgeon. Cross your fingers!! :D

Ya i'm fine with saying its the whitmud creek. I've heard good things about dawson park and would love to check it out. What time of year was it when you caught the sturgeon?

Nice Fish and Pics!

You seemed unsure that you had longnose sucker so I thought I'd pass on a little tip for identifying them in the future.

You are correct in stating that is longnose sucker, that particular fish appears to have a fairly pronounced nose, but for future reference another easy way to tell them from a white sucker is by the small scales at the front of the body that gradually get larger towards the tail, white suckers will have large scales throughout the length of their body, although they can cross breed making identification a little more difficult.

On an additional note their are two species of garter snakes that can be found in the area; red-sided snake and wandering garter snake. I believe that one is a red-side but don't know for sure.

Anyways just thought you'd be interested.

Keep the Pics a coming!!!

This summer I plan to hit the NSR as often as possible, just such a great spot.It is always interesting to see what you can catch.Correct me if I am wrong but is the following the list of species;Walleye,Sauger,Goldeye,Mooneye,Burbot,Pike ,Rocky mountain whitefish,Lake sturgeon,Quillback,River redhorse,White sucker, silver redhorse,Longnose sucker.I have even been told that Brown's are occasionally taken within city limits...And that Perch can be found in slower moving portions of the river.Anyone know????

I have a friend whom claims to have caught a brown years ago. Not sure if it's true. I don't know if there are quillback any more. I had a book (its mia) called the alberta book of fishies. It made mention of the redhorse and the quill back being present in the nsr but not a very frequent catch. I've actually told ppl of them and they didn't believe that they exsisted. Some of the species are limited in area. I'm not certain how far downstream from the moauntains the rockys go but I've never caught one.
Has n e one caught a quillback or a red horse? Whats the furthest down stream n e one has caught a rockywhite?

I didn't post yest but I've got a new story

May 12th. went to nsr. It was a little slow but a good time. I only had one Wally and a decent Sauger. My buddy caught a few decent Wally. He had a pig on shore but it spat the hook and eluded him so we have no pic but I know the fish had to be at least 28 inches!! It was a real monster fish and I know he was heart broken. The shore is really muddy and it's hard to move around because the boots get vacuumed down. He got his hands on it but it got away. It was the second time that we have had this happen.

In 2005 I got a pig Wally on shore and at the same time it spat the hook, it flipped back into the water. My buddy got his hands on it but it got out of them. The fish was probably in the 27 inch department and at the time would have been my largest walleye but instead I never even got to touch it. It was a heart breaker. (Maybe we should get a net!! Duh!)

May 13th. THE STORY. Remember how i spoke of my buddy catching a 28+ inch walleye, getting it on shore and it eluding him so we couldn't get a pic? Well he was having nighmare's about it. So we went back. Long story short....I'll be posting a picture of him with a 29 inch walleye soon as my phone manages to send it to my email account. It was the same fish he lost the day b4!!! His personal best too.

WildlifeBio N e chance you could identify this fish?
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w90/FisherPotch/Mattwithlargesucker.jpg
I know it looks similar to a goldeye but trust me it is not. This fish has a sucker mouth but i forgot to take a look at the shape of the sucker.

We've also got some greenish coloured suckers but i don't have any pics on this cpu. any chance your know the species i speak of?

Fisherpotch that looks like a quillback,There are still lots of redhorse and quillback in the river, the dawson park area is were I almost always catch both species on a lindy rig with a worm. The redhorse are cool looking with a olive body and bright red fins, the silver redhorse looks like a white sucker but with a blunter head and large scales, yeah there suckers I know...But can be pretty cool looking at times...

Cool. I'll be let'n my buddy know that he caught a quillback last year. The photo that was in my alberta book of fishes must have been adolecent or something because the dorsal fin looked to be spiney and the fish my buddy caught didn't seem to have spines. We have spoke many time of how we would like to catch redhorse and quillback. Now i know that they both are around and he can scratch quillback off his list. The fact that they are not sport fish and are suckers doesn't bother me. I like the variation. Thanks for the info!! :D

hey bigbore

ive gone out once this year no bites nothing.

Fishing was dead.

That spot has gone downhill since a bunch of guys went in there and poached walleye.

Kept some 10+ pounders, ive saw it with my own eyes.

Last year to boot, i was checked by co's there. Unreal.

Ive got monsters of walleye there my biggest is 12lbs.

What about you, flyfishing for eyes yet?

PS: I have to get fishinfool on the wire to make a trip

Had some fun last night. Went through a tub of minnows in about 3 hours, although we lost most of the fish. VERY light bites; if you didn't have a stinger hook you wouldn't hook anything. We lost 2 that we figured were over 25" right at shore, but it was too muddy to try to grab them.
