I believe it's a genetically altered ,stocked sterilized trout 'so it can't reproduce and alter native fish but grows faster and fatter for our pleasure.

Yep, triploids can't reproduce so they don't waste energy spawning and growing eggs.

They eat!

I've heard in healthy waters with lot's of food they can put on an inch a month.

We where down in Montana and my friend caught a 16.8 pound rainbow

Apparently the lake is filled with freshwater shrimp

A Triploid rainbow will grow when pushed with feed, almost a pound a month in a commercial operation.A 8-10 inch fingerling in early may will give you a 5-6 lb trout by freeze up. You will find approx 1% of Triploids will be immune to the process and will still have eggs.

Normal reproduction results in Diploid fish each carrying half of each parents chromosomes. When the developing eggs are subjected to a very slight temperature increase, the result is a triploid fish. This results in a lack of gender, therefore no energy placed into egg/sperm production. Adults raised in this way gain weight faster as the food intake goes directly into the fishes growth.

Trout Addict are you talking about Duck Lake in Montana or Mission? Havent seen anything close to 16 pounds come out of Duck in a few years if that is the case.

Actually it's called four horns,
don't mind sharing the name because good luck getting there!

Big, deep lake, caught from shore on a size 14 chronomid

wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't been there!
