I came across a local bait place that had pink "extra large smelts". I've only been fishing the hard water for the last 6 or 7 years but I never knew of such a bait. What have your experiences been with these pink smelts? Im trying them either way but my curiosity is killing me!

That's all I've been using for at least 3yr now, the green ones aren't so bad either.....

When yu catch 40 pounders theres no such thing as a hole thats too big. And ya, I spear them...as clearly proven by the extra large smelt and treble hook in thw corner if his mouth :-p
I kept the popup on this hole for a few days :-):shark:

Left the tent on the hole for a week...the hole was froze over solid when I moved the tent. But thanks for turning the thread from pink smelts in to your paranoid condesension:sHa_shakeshout:

Fished the same hole for a couple weeks and kept making the hole a bit bigger every time i went out..It was getting to big though and starting to get a little dangerous in the 3 man tent with a little bit of water on the ice around the hole :-) You're right it is very nice to see whats going on down there!

Right on, thats a good idea!! Do you have to thaw them first? That could get messy. I would think the redder better??

Ya I was thinking that red would be really good I'm going to let them thaw just a bit then put a bit of water and a bunch of red dye then let them sit in the fridge for a few hours

did some yellow herring last year, seemed to work ok, might want to take some rubber gloves, especially if you have a couple brews, wont just be your hands come home red :bad_boys_20:

The pale green ones are fantabulous for lakers and I find the green better than red for pike. Though if they arent too dyed red or more pinkish they work well for me.

I had smaller green ones under tip ups at burn stick last weekend. Green out fished regular two to one, but who the heck knows. Could also be that one hole was just "hotter" than the other.
