To early here too. Snow is so damn deep, and hard, you'll burn 1000 calories walking 1/8 of a mile. Have to wait a bit longer I think.

If there is a resident 'herd' of valley deer, mulie or whitetail, they tend to bed on south facing slopes alot during winter. I have found drops from the ridgetops to the valley bottom. The only problem with valleys that if there are porcupines, rabbits, and squirrels in the same area, they will chew the antlers up pretty quick.

Hoping to find a pair of snowshoes that will fit my big feet this year. Havent tried river valleys yet...but have been spending time around brush that leads into grain fields.

I found most of mine glassing open slopes. A few in the bush on trails and in bedding spots. A few the dog picks up.
