223 for caliber, cheap ammo cost if not reloading, easy to find, small holes, enough jam to go through a shoulder. As for gun- your choice. I'm a Savage guy, I use a model 10 preditor with an upgraded scope. I wouldn't get anything bigger than 16x magnification. My thoughts...

22-250 is likely the most popular "coyote" rifle out there, and the 204 Ruger seems to be very popular too. I can't disagree with choosing a .223 though.

The .243 is popular too, although harder on pelts than the others at times, depending on your choice of bullets / loads. That could be said of almost any rifle though.

i picked up a savage axis 22-250 and even with the scope that came with it i have had no problem with it and for the price you cant go wrong! They also come in 223 calibre if thats what your after.

22-250, .223, or .204 are all very popular and will serve well for what you are looking for.
as for the gun, savage is a great value gun and i own a couple myself. My fav is a tikka though. bang for the buck is hard to beat.

I went 243 win using 58 grain hornady because it will probably double as my daughter and son's first deer rifle some day.

get a mini 14.. now you can get the harmonic dampener to help tighten up groups or the kel tech su16. the kel tech is a sweet little truck gun because it folds in half. A semi is great when you got 2-3 yotes standing around

I am thinking about getting a Ruger .204....any thoughts on this choice, seems like a great flat shooting gun that will cause minimal damage. Thanks for any tips.

and with those two options you can miss the first yote standing then unload the mag missing the rest as they run for cover! lol

buy a nice bolt gun...even a cheapy savage or marlin will outshoot those semi's

if you cant hit the broad side of a barn a cheap and or expensive bolt gun aint going to help you 1 bit. a new mini with the HD can be a 1moa gun. if you cant hit a yote where you need to with that then you shouldnt be trying to shoot them

We recently added a Savage 11 FCNS .223 to the collection. My wife likes her .243 but had I liked the H&R Ultra in .223 with a 6x24 scope. Worked well, was very inexpensive and quite accurate. I like the short length and easy handling characteristics. Did some trading and ended up with a Savage 11 FCNS .223 that I put another 6x24 on and a dime will more than cover all four rounds. And it likes the cheap ammo! Plus it didn't even damage the bank account! and I haven't been a fan of the Savage for a while. Last summer I obtained a Stevens 22MAg (again, I like the short length and easy handling characteristics) with the 13 1/2" barrel that impressed me but it is a bit light for coyotes out part 150 plus yards where as the .223 has more than double that range. It often boils down to is, where are you looking for the coyotes as to what is the best for your circumstances. We often keep a 12 gauge handy if we are in scrub or willow country for the coyotes that appear 20 yards way out of nowhere.

CAN BE is the magic ticket. I hate paying $1000 for a maybe 1moa semi-auto truck gun. Not a whole lot a person can do in this country to fix up them mini14. Now if we could ship them to the states we could accurize them for a little more money involved. Think I'll stick with my bolt guns.

ive been down the road you speak of a few times.

ive done the non restricted semi auto varmint build.

Ended up with a 4000 dollar 2"-3" grouping gun that sat in the safe while i took a bolt gun out and nailed coyotes consistently.

If the AR15 was non restricted we wouldnt need to have this talk.

Back to the original question, pick any of the varmint centerfires and find a good load for it and you'll be happy. I have a 204, 223, and 22-250 all at my disposal. The 204 usually gets the nod as I keep pelts and it tends to do the less damage, however my 223 shooting 52gr bergers seems to be a pelt saver too and is a lot lighter to pack around in this deep snow enviroment. The 22-250 was my first varmint gun and is too accurate to get rid of so I save it for hunting prairie conditions or if the wind could be a factor. No experience with the 17's but all I've read about them I would be willing to sample one. No experience with anything bigger than 22 cal on coyotes but am thinking about a dedicated wolf gun cause... why not?

204 Thoughts? Check ammo costs. I my opinion this will be the most fun gun to shoot and as aresult the gun you shoot most often.

240 weatherby is also a good yote gun. you can get the weatherby vanguard S2 for pretty cheap and they are guaranteed to shoot very well!!you can also get them in 22-250 and 223!!

I love my rem 700 sps varmint, as a big guy I don't mind he weight. 243 55gr nosler partition varmint do the trick. Biggest thing is don't price yourself out of the sport, yeah you can spend thousands of dollars, but 660 at cabelas and from the shelf with a cheap minox scope it's a .75" group at 100

I love my 22 but I just prefer to use my 7mm and BAM it's done. Not cheap but boy does it work. Lol. If you don't care for the pelt them use whatever rifle you own. I would like to get a 22-250 but a 22 would be cheaper to use. Heck a hornet would do the trick if you don't mind spending a little more on ammo then the 22.
