So my old auger finally died a horrible death, lol. So now on the hunt for a new one. I am looking to get a 8" or a 10" auger. I have heard good things about the new electric ones as well as the propane ones, but my old 6" lasted for 13years and It was beat and used alot, not sure if a electric or a propane would take that. What are you guys using and what are the ones to avoid?
THanks for any help I plan on getting one soon and hopfully it will last as long as my old one did.

Sthil. Seems like everything else has a 5 year max life span....I just the got tired of the crap usual suspects are putting on the market. There are lots of threads on all the various types. Punch a model in the search box and you will have hours, and lots of opinions on which to make a decision. Regardless stay away from any Jiffy made after 2009.

Using the Eskimo Z71....it's a heavy pig, but cuts great with tons of power...I would not recommend it if you are a lightweight. I was biased in buying Eskimo again as our previous Eskimo lasted us 19 years with no troubles and is still running...lots of great augers out there, try searching some previous threads as there are a lot on this topic...

got NILS too, but manual and drill convertable.
not cutting like butter, but better than all the other manual ones I've used.

Normark/husky. Wait until the go on sale this spring. I asked when they went on sale a few years ago and the day they did I got to wholesale at four and there was only one left in the province. Low rpm and quite, high torque, very light, dependable in all weather, well built and long lasting. I often hike into lakes carrying it at my side like you would a hand auger. The difference in price will pay for its self in the long run .

Find a good fishing buddy that has an auger and take them with you and have them drill all the holes.

Love my Eskimo gas. Wish I would have got a 10" tho.

I use Eskimo z71 for the second season, 10inch never had any problems starting or drilling.
I did adjust a carb a bit lately as I think it was on a rich side and it's even better. But I guess with the power it has it drilled good even if it was a bit off.

Strikemaster ! And if you fish anywhere central or north get a bit extension. Here up north last week the ice was almost to the end of my bit.

For the lady, an 18 volt cordless with a nils auger bit, light, mobile and available in many complimentary colors.i like blue. (Makita)For others, OLD steel jiffy 30 . No plastic. Found on the buy and sell often under 300$ take to a reputable small engine shop. You can pass them to your grandchildern ,Old Eskimos are close .go steel or have parts break at the most inconvenient times. Just ask WC. (He does hate jiffy however)

I run a Tanaka Ice auger that had been purchased in the mid 80's and literally has drilled bajillion holes. needed some parts this year but nothing major. Not a very common auger but I thought I would put my 2 bits in.
