WOW! Just WOW!
It's not often you hear about this happen.

A fisherman off Panama was battling a huge black marlin when the battle took a turn for the worse. The fish sank the boat.

Or as Marlin Magazine put it on its Facebook post, "Marlin Wins!"

Not all the details are in, but apparently the captain began backing down on the huge fish, a common practice in big-game fishing when a fish is taking line. He puts the boat in reverse to chase the fish.

One commenter on Marlin Magazine's Facebook post who apparently had some knowledge of the incident said that the captain fell as he was backing down on the fish at full throttle. The boat took on too much water and, finally, there was no correcting the situation.

Marlin Magazine reported that the boat went to the bottom of the sea and everybody on board was rescued by the photo boat. And, of course, the fish got away.

More photos as the boat sinks and the fish continues to jump:

I would have called total BOGUS on all that if it wasn't for the explination of backing up to fast and swamping the boat, which sunk her. First glance looked like someone was trying to pass off the Marlin tipped the boat....but yep a bad manouver like reversing to agressively, falling and not being able to stop or control the full reverse with a bit of wave action will deep 6 a boat in no time. Sinking due to bad seamanship, not massive marlin. Man that would suck!!

The actually had no part in capsizing the boat other than being the reason why the captain had the boat in reverse. Bad situation with the boat stuck full throtle in reverse after the captain falls down and the boat just continues to have the waves roll over the back everntually sinking the ship. Cool to see the pictures tho.

No way you are going to put the boat in reverse to chase a big game fish. Not enough speed in reverse with that boat to be able to match the fish' speed to retrieve excess line.

its not about catching up to the fish. just decreasing the amount of line it peels off so it doesnt spool you.

Big game is almost always chased in reverse. Get yourself down to cabo in marlin season, go out on a charter and you'll see. They HAMMER down in reverse and take on water like crazy.

Don't see anything in that video that would suggest taking on water to the tune that it would sink the boat. And that was by their estimate a 1200 lbs fish.

I will admit they were running in reverse. But I still do not belive the story about the sinking.

if the waves are coming over the stern, and the captain fell down while the boat was in full reverse, i could easily see the boat capsizing

well thats a big weight for that marlin...it musta tired him out pretty quick.
Did they catch the fish or did the boat sink to the bottom and take that fish w/ it?
What happened to the fish?...nvm the boat
