Good Fish Finder

Can anyone recomend a good fish finder at a decent price? I want to be able to see structure, fish etc. Any info would be appreciated.

Lots of good finders out there for as little a $200.00 to $3500.00 ish.:)

Hey Garry, They have Humminbird 728 fish finders on for 269.95 reg 349.95 @ The Fishin' Hole South. Unit is a dual beam 20 deg and 60 deg 5 " screen, 640V X 320 H pixels, 4000 watts peak to peak. All depends on what you are looking for. Do you want color/gps? What price range are you looking for. If I know that I can recommend a few for you..........Kevin

Humminbird products might be the way to go considering the compatibility options with your minn kota motor, cannon down-riggers, etc....

Here's a few things to consider -

- 700 series and up are Ethernet capable

- 700 series and down have quick disconnects

so, by my train of thought, a 700 series has two great features ......

798ci HD SI - internal gps/chart with high definition sonar, down imaging and side imaging, dual card slots, 5" screen - greatest unit on earth - $ 1050

788ci HD DI - all of the above except side imaging - $ 850

788ci HD - all of above except no side and down imaging - $750

Those are the units with a internal GPS and Chart - I wouldn't buy a unit without this feature .............

If Ethernet isn't in your budget or you don't need it - Look at the 500 series and down.

It all depends on what exactly you're looking for, and what you're willing to spend.

$100-500 will get you a very basic unit that'll show you structure and fish.

I would go with something in the $500-1000 range if you can swing it. You'll get the all important built in GPS, a 5" color screen, and ability to network units and upgrade later, including SI and DI. The Bird 788 above or the Lowrance HDS5 and Elite 5/Elite7 units for example.

You're looking at $1000-1500 to get into a unit with GPS, true DI/SI, and a 5-7" screen. For that price range, you're looking and anything from the 788ci HD SI to the HDS7 Gen 2 touch with Structure Scan.

Over $1500, and you're paying for screen size and ease of use, but there's tons of options, all the way up to $3500+.

I prefer the Lowrance units, but I really don't think you can go wrong with either of them, they both work amazing well. Just a note when comparing Humminbird to Lowrance though - Bird's 7 series units are actually the equivalent of Lowrance's 5 series units when it comes to screen size and features. You have to get into the 8 and 9 series Birds to get the equivalent of an HDS7 in screen size.

There's some great prices out there right now on new Lowrance Gen2 units. I'd also suggest checking the forums, Kijiji, etc... for a good used setup. You'll be able to get a lot bigger screen and more options for the same price you'll pay for a new unit, and in most cases, there's not a whole lot of change from year to year. There'll be some good deals to be had from guys upgrading to the latest and greatest.
