What is everybodies go to pike lure?

I have always used a big spinner with good success

http://www.jimporter.org/articles/gifs/art118-4.jpg

and you can't go wrong with a buzzbait pulled on top of the water in some shallows

For early water in May, just the good ole 5-o-diamonds spoon, Len Thompson, yellow and red, size 00.

Awsome thread!!

Black Fury!!! Went out yesterday and caught a few pike very shallow near the surface. Made for some very intense strikes even though they were small. Top water strikes are the ultimate.

Also landed 3 walleye, one at a hair over 25 inches. One nice gold eye too! All on the FURY.

Gotta love when you go out with your rod rigged and not have to change your lure once!! Best day of 07 open water season for me. Also considering i only got about 2 hours of fishing in.

BIG SPINNERS has my vote. And the boys I went with were wishing that they hadn't left theirs at home. Only one other fish was caught and it was a sucker. Just goes to show sometimes you can leave the bait at home.

I love the five of diamonds. It never lets me down, BUT i am going to do crank-baits on the surface this weekend. This is new to me, but with all of the talk of Pike slamming your crank-bait on the surface I have to give it a go.
Good luck everyone.

Big spoon, the bigger the better, 5d or red an' white. Yellow jig and a minnow with easily snappable 6 lb test while fishing for walleye always seems to attract pike as well.

Good luck on the top water dodger. I for one find pike top water strikes to be one of the most exciting occurrences in fishing especially if they hit it when you’re real close. If you get wet.....GREAT!

My go to pike lure is always the chartreuse spinnerbait. I mostly fish for pike with lures at Glenmore Reservoir. This lure rarely misses there. Elsewhere (prairie Reservoirs), I exclusively flyfish in spring.

Ya, i have had lots of fun burnin inlines, and playing with the soft bodies. I agree with the guys above, top water is explosive, but boys, its tough to beat the balsa. My bread and butter. FISH WITH TEETH BOYS....ANYTHING ELSE IS JUST BAIT.

edit; kinda gettin myself excited. I havent been out yet.

4'' One OZ Whitefish Williams Wabler. And Lucky Strike Whitefish. Never fails. Even better than 5 of Diamonds on any body of water. Matches the natural food in the lake which mainly consists of Whitefish.

I was doing some good business with the following on the weekend:

- Shadow Shad Rap was great and they were pounding it but the hooks are to light for sustained pike abuse

- White (best) or chartreuse spinner bait was awesome, they were slamming it on the drop

- Large perch X-Rap (shallow) was the eventual winner. It is robust to survive 40+ toothy buggers and they were still smoking it pretty good

As all have said, red and white, five of diamonds, (does anyone have the one without the red diamonds) my fave would be the six inch split back minnow (floater of course cause it's top water), prefer the shiny bellied one but the orange on the belly (hint perch) is also deadly. Has to be calm water early morning or just as the sun is setting. Cast it out, let all the ripples disappear, give it a one ft. jerk and wait. 20 seconds later do it again. If there is a shark even looking that way, you had better be ready. WOOO HOO. Been there done that

I find it amazing how many people enjoy using red and get good results with it after watching videos on how the colour is perceived underwater.

Since I fish from shore I guess the depth wouldn't really make a difference ... then again there are quite a few places it's easy to fish deeper than 10' from shore.

Five of Diamonds has been my go to lure the last couple years.
2 things I want to try this year though is a spinner bait and fly fishing for Pike.

If one is casting, or trolling slow, in shallow water (under 10') then any "big shiny metal", like a LT 5 of diamonds, or a shallow diving (7') long crank (rapala or bomber) is hard to beat. If one is trolling deeper, off the weed bed edges (12-16'), my besties are short, fat 14' diving cranks. And it seems the ones with some red or orange (perch colors?) are the best bet. While we will get some on other things, it seems we only usually get the big mommas on those. For still fishing or shore fishing, of course, it is hard to beat big bait (where allowed) or big jigs with big plastic artificial tails stirring up the bottom (1 ounce or more, because you can cast them a very long way with the right line and heavyish gear).

I bought a Suick Sucker lure a couple years ago. Tried it at a lake that Iknow holds big fish and got nothing so put it away and havent used it since. I know these lures catch fish, maybe I was doing something wrong? Its not a very pretty lure so if its not catching, its easy to put away and forget about. Any tips on proper technique with this lure? To me i was unimpressed.

My go to's are:

Rapala X-Rap crankbait in either perch or pike pattern
Livetarget crankbait in perch pattern
Also use some random spoons sometimes with varying success (red devil, 5 diamonds, mepps etc)
If I'm casting in the weeds I love using spinnerbaits, makes the pike go nuts.

I've tried endlessly with Mepp's agila / black fury style spinners, and never catch anything. So many people swear by them and I swear its a giant conspiracy that these work.

Have never used one, but everyone raves...says #1 pike lure, so I had to buy one. On the MB fishing forums I read, guys say it's THE lure. I've watched a few YouTube vids, and apparently it's all about making sure you get the tail fin adjusted properly. When the lure is "tuned" right, it's a go-to.

I actually first heard about it when The Dimestore Fisherman was in Red Deer at the annual Sportsman Show, and did a seminar talking about how it's his favourite thing to chuck into the weeds and "rip cabbage" with.

Looking forward to testing it out this summer...

Blaze orange Williams Wabler became my go to spoon. Gold Johnson Silver Minnow for weedless. X-rap and Rattlin Rap are also good.

Early spring it's a 4-6" soft bait with a paddle tail and belly treble in the shallows. Storm made a good one but it's been discontinued.

There are a bunch of different ways to fish them, but my favorite and most effective is the jerk retrieve. As you jerk it it will dive under the water, after you stop it will begin to float back up, the second it breaks the surface give it another jerk so it dives down again. The nose of the bait comes up first so as soon as it breaks the surface and you jerk again it makes a splash in the water and pulls a lot of air down with it leaving a trail of bubbles behind.

My favorite colors have always been black, perch and the walleye color. Have put many big fish in the boat with these baits, but they have all been in Ontario!

The pike were killing my chrome-blue rattlin' rap and blue original rap today. Tried a couple other perch type patterns but they weren't interested...where I go they seem to like those better in the fall.
