I dont think so anymore but I think you used to be able to if I am not mistaken....BUT part of the reason Badger has declined as a great fishery IMHO is this tournament.

....again this is just my opinion. Used to make an annual spring trip there and catch several over 40's on the fly from shore....went this year to our good spots and caught nothing....

Badger is not what it once was much like many if the lakes in Alberta.

A few years ago,15 years, 1st to 3rd place were in the mid 30,s, a fisher man came in with a 30lb. pike he was out of the money, the organizers of the derby said anyone who catches a 30 lb pike and does not get any prize money is not fair, they gave the fisherman a 100 dollers. big fish have been caught over the years.

Stuff it with lead shot and weight it up again - a couple lead sinkers would have changed everything. lol.

Certainly a memorable pike for sure - nice job.

Check with the derby organizers they will tell you the same story,1st, 2nd and 3rd place were all over 30 lbs, They used to display the the winning fish in a ice box in front of the weight station, all 3 were side by side in this cooler, super impressive.

No need to keep any fish for a mount, This is what they need now...

Ultimately, an accurate length (tip to tip) and largest girth measurements are all that are required and a good picture of the fish to show shape and colour.

We can still do a replica from a "tall tale" where a client doesn't have any measurements or pictures; as we can figure it out from some simple questions with the clients to determine what we would need to reproduce their catch.

Congratulations on the nice fish. Badger would be an ideal lake to make a C&R fishery for southern Alberta. I put up a thread last year about making it a C&R trophy lake and the idea did get some support but enforcement of this would be difficult.

Who would we have to talk to in order to get Badger turned into C&R?

Why do u want to change this lake to C&R only. Its still producing big pike and good numbers. Try and fix something thats not broke and possibly screw it up.

Did you guys get interviewed by Fish and Wildlife over the weekend? How many you got, what you were using, types of hooks, how long you fished for etc?

Gators
02-24-2013, 12:07 PM
I'm not sure how changing Badger to a C&R lake is gonna screw it up. It has native species, nothing has been stocked ie walleye that would reduce the baitfish population or change the ecology of the lake. I find it hard to believe releasing fish is going to harm the lake in anyway. Besides there are plenty of larger lakes in the area to fish if you like to keep fish for dinner.

Yes and they were also handing out Len Thompson spoons to the kids which was awesome of them, maybe there's some truth to derby bait bans province wide.

What did lakes do before humans started to fish them... Did nature screw them up? What about northern lakes that hold fish but have little to no angling....are they all screwed up?

I figure there has to be a reason people pay big dollars to go on fly in fishing trips to lakes that receive little fishing pressure. What would the harm be turning Badger C&R.

Unfortunately, Nobody you will "talk to" can wave a magic wand and say "good idea, let's make it C&R".

Last I heard the magic wand was on the planet of Kolob where all the Mormons keep all the cool stuff or something - maybe that might work.

It's going to take some work.

The biologist and SRD make that call after they have identified a problem, done a study and determined that to be the best course of action.

All you can do is bring any concerns to their attention. That's a start. The Mormons would be my second call, they have some pull too.

The AFGA can also bring it forward as a resolution but there is no guarantee it will get traction with the membership and less of chance it will be considered by the SRD.

If you, and others are serious, there is allot of work to be done to make this happen.

Badger and some other lakes are in a special situation.

They are not closed populations.

No sure what purpose making Badger a catch and release fishery prove, other than put a lot more pressure on the lakes in the surrounding area, McGreagor, Little Bow, Travers, Keho, Newell. Badger Lake has been a good fishery for a long time, catch and release or catch and keep if you so choose. There are big fish, small fish, of different species for all to enjoy, why fool with it.

Turn it into a legitimate Trophy fisherie.

It is as the first pic in this thread has proven,,, and that fish came in second,, it could o with a limit reduction or size limit change,, or slot size on keeperd.

There's hogs in bigger bodies of water just harder to catch, that's where the real trophy lakes are. Small lakes like Badger, Keho and Clear makes the hunting so much easier.

Well the website posts the weights and I believe them to be the true weights of the fish that win the derby so I think in this instance it is ok to believe what i read on the internet... I never disputed what you said about Badger not living up to its former glory all i did was point out that the weights have increased since C&R was implemented... actually, what I said supports what you said, that the derby has lowered the quality of fishing at Badger from its hayday 15 years ago. Since C&R we have seen an increase in the weight so maybe it is helping bring it back to top form once again. 2 fish, that for all intents and purposes weigh 30 Lbs. came in first and second... for the last few years the winners have been in the high 20's with 2-3rd being mid to high 20's... seems to me that the website numbers help show an increase in large fish at Badger...

Derby or no, Badger gets a lot of pressure. I started fishing it back in the early 80s after reading an article about fly fishing pike in the Alberta Fishing guide- "Stalking the water Wolf" I believe. The lake has taken a hammering ever since. Back then there was also a 5 fish/day limit with no size restriction and Badger handled it well. I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to fix something that works.
