slow day on the ice. always cool to be up high and in the snow though. kinda depressing coming back down and seeing all the brown ground again heading east toward home. despite the fish not fully cooperating, still managed a few shots from the trip. enjoy.

Big beautiful bullies.

As usual, great job. I'm basically done ice-fishing this year, I can't resist the fly. If your heading south in the future, let me know.. the rivers have been producing pretty good for me as of late.

There are only so many lakes in alberta you can catch bulls like that through the ice. Check your regs, you'll figure it out :)

Do you see the numbered tag just behind the eye? Spaghetti tags wear out....these ones last longer. I wonder what lake that could be??

very good eye, Mr Scud.

i contacted the area fisheries biologist for the region this tagged fish was caught in last week. conversations were had and pictures, measurements, and other data noted by myself on this catch was forwarded to him. i received the data sheet back on the male fish known as A08. with the permission of the biologist, please see his comments below as well as the data sheet on Bull Trout A08. very interesting information i thought at least a few members and fellow fisherman may enjoy.

Note : i measured this fish last week on my measuring board at 73 cm.

Dace

from the area fisheries biologist.

"That bull trout you caught was first tagged in August 2000, when it was 59 cm long (fork length). Since it was likely at least six years old when first tagged, that would mean that it was at least 19 years old when you caught it.

Cheers,
Jim"

known history on Bull Trout A08 since 17/08/2000

also. during the conversations i had with the area fisheries biologist i learned of something else i'd like to pass along. all the bull trout tagged with the external spaghetti tags (which many now are no longer on the fish or in some cases difficult to read) were also tagged with a visible implant (VI) tag at the same time. most of these tags were implanted into the left side of the fishes head behind the eye as this fish was, although if it didn't take on the left side some may be found on the right side. i haven't caught a spaghetti tagged fish for a couple years now, and will be more observant looking for the VI tags on the fish going forward. i will continue to share my notes and observations as a fisherman with our biologists and would encourage you all to do the same. i also plan to post some more data shared by this area fisheries biologist at a later time, for any that may be interested.

i need to add to the above post as i missed an important piece of information regarding the tagged fish. there is no need to look for a VI tags on bulls that still have an adipose fin. the adipose fin has been removed/clipped from only the bulls that were tagged. therefore if the fish still has an adipose fin, it will not be a tagged fish. thanks.

So this is the tag? like a game of where's waldo... how is it attached?

The VI tag is applied with the use of a special flattened needle that is inserted into the clear tissue behind the eye. A flattened plunger then pushes the tag out of the needle and into the slot created by the needle.

Good show Dace. You got one of the biggest fish left. I don't believe there are many Bulls over 30" in that lake. I'll have to ask my friends if they got any fish with yellow tags in the last year. Some of the really old fish are shrinking in mass and left with a giant head.

Great job Dace on catching such a beautiful and well aged Bully, and for taking the time to follow up on the tag and let us know what you found.

Easily one of the coolest things I've learned online about fishing. I think I need to catch me a tagged bully just for the interesting follow up research.

Will definately keep an eye open for they eye tags, I caught 3 this winter with spaghetti tags but never looked for the eye tags. Definately nice to see the tracking information and age of these fish. Talking to someone up there last wee said he caught his two biggest this year both over 10lbs

Thanks for sharing this information Dace. I enjoy reading your posts as they always bring a fine balance of knowledge, conservation and damn good fishing.

Very neat to hook into a 19y/o Bull - bound to be a grand daddy by now hey?
